Masterpieces that sing of freedom. Recommended popular songs.

When work, studies, or relationships aren’t going well and everything feels stifling, we all sometimes find ourselves thinking, “Ah, I just want to be free…” Freedom may be one of the things people seek most in life.

We fight for freedom, we struggle for it.

These are songs that sing of those daily endeavors and ways of living.

Some are quite serious—so moving they can feel heavy on the heart.

I hope you can find something that fits your current mood—songs that resonate, give you strength to live, or warm your heart—and use them as a change of pace.

A classic anthem to freedom. Recommended popular songs (21–30)

STAY AWAYL’Arc〜en〜Ciel

L’Arc~en~Ciel – STAY AWAY ROCK ODYSSEY 2004
STAY AWAYL'Arc〜en〜Ciel

A powerful L’Arc~en~Ciel track that starts off as if it’s already seized freedom—now it’s all about charging ahead! “STAY AWAY” was released in 2000 as their 20th single.

Even while being free, it’s a song that makes you feel it’s up to you how to enjoy that freedom and which path to take.

It’s a quintessentially L’Arc song with a sense of speed; if you’re spending your days itching to break free, this number will clear the clouds and leave you feeling refreshed.

The Price of FreedomLinked Horizon

Speaking of Linked Horizon, their hit song Guren no Yumiya, the theme for the anime Attack on Titan, is hugely iconic—both as their signature track and for its strong association with the anime.

This song, The Price of Freedom, was also used as the theme for the 2015 film Attack on Titan The Movie: Part 2 – Wings of Freedom.

Although it’s a song about freedom, the title The Price of Freedom suggests a sense of “we obtained freedom, but…”—which is far from a happy, carefree image.

It links to the anime’s worldview, carrying a heavy tone that makes you ponder what freedom truly is.

Born to be freeX JAPAN

A song by the Japanese rock band X JAPAN, released in 2015 as a digital-only single.

It begins with a striking piano intro and sings about how everyone is born in the name of freedom and can live pursuing dreams without limit.

In the flow of time ~ become a bird ~Gorin Mayumi

Released in 1986, this is Mayumi Itsuwa’s 31st single.

Although it’s an older song, I imagine many people have heard it since it was used in commercials.

With its powerful vocals and straightforward lyrics, it’s a masterpiece that stays with you after just one listen.

Like a birdŌhashi Torio

This is a gentle number by ohashiTrio, selected in October 2017 as the theme song for TBS’s “The World Heritage.” Later included on the best album “ohashiTrio best Too,” the piece is notable for its warm piano and sweeping strings.

The sound seems to mirror birds soaring across vast landscapes, inviting listeners’ hearts to a sky of freedom.

When you want to step away from daily life for a refresh, or when you’re filled with a longing to travel, listening to it will surely make your heart feel lighter.

Why not experience the sensation of being enveloped by majestic nature?

Wild at Heartarashi

Wild at Heartarashi

It was Arashi’s 37th single and the theme song for the Fuji TV drama “Lucky Seven.” When you’re feeling down, listening to it feels like someone is reaching out a hand to you.

Its upbeat rhythm lifts your spirits and puts you in a positive mood.

It’s also a great crowd-pleaser at karaoke.
