[The Legend of Heisei and Makuhari] GLAY’s Best Collection of Popular Songs and Hidden Gems

Across Japan, especially throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the nation was swept up in GLAY fever.

At their outdoor concert held at Makuhari Messe in 1999, they set an unprecedented record by drawing 200,000 attendees, etching their name forever as a nationally beloved rock band.

Even as time has passed since then, many people find that whenever songs like “BELOVED,” “Yuuwaku,” and “HOWEVER” play, memories of their youth come flooding back.

In this article, we revisit GLAY’s iconic tracks that blazed through the Heisei era and explore their timeless appeal.

I’m looking for ‘I LOVE YOU’.GLAY

This is their 39th double A-side single, paired with “Kurenai to Kuro no MATADORA.” It served as the theme song for TV Asahi’s Friday Night Drama ‘Dageki Tenshi Ruri’ and is a gentle, GLAY-style ballad.

TAKURO says it’s an answer song to HOWEVER.

The soaring melody in the chorus feels wonderful.

Many of you may remember that it was the theme song for the Fuji TV romantic reality show “Ainori.” It’s a love song depicting the meetings and partings of men and women.

With a melody that evokes a touch of loneliness, it brings to mind cold winter scenes.

The final lyric, “We were two people who knew from the start our destinations were different,” is heartbreaking.

SurvivalGLAY

Released as a video single, which is rare these days—almost unheard of.

It’s also included on the album HEAVY GAUGE.

A danceable rock number, with a very striking rapid-fire section in the chorus.

Definitely a song you’d want to sing at karaoke.

lipsGLAY

The 11th single, which earned them their first-ever No.

1 on the Oricon Singles Chart.

A fast-paced rock number that kicks off with a full-throttle chorus right from the start.

The synthesizer humming in the background adds a great flavor.

The interlude features some intricate developments, including passages in irregular time signatures.

BE WITH YOUGLAY

The 15th single became the theme song for the Fuji TV drama Tabloid, starring Takako Tokiwa and Koichi Sato.

As the title suggests, it straightforwardly sings about the feeling of love.

It’s an essential, classic love song when talking about GLAY.

You can feel a kind of resolve for two people to lean on each other.

It’s likely often used at weddings and similar occasions.

GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONGLAY

This song, the 22nd single, is a rock tune crafted with live performances firmly in mind, and the opening “ONE LOVE” of the chorus also became the title of the next original album.

The mysterious phrases that come in from the second verse and the guitar solo work well as a spice, adding depth to the track.

LAYLAGLAY

I played GLAY’s “LAYLA” on guitar.
LAYLAGLAY

The fourth track on the 33rd single, “G4.” Does finding the lyric “I can still do it—though not as deftly as I once did” pierce your heart mean you’re getting older? It’s a masterpiece I want not only young people but also those in their 30s and 40s to hear.
