Reiwa era mustn't be missed: an enka singer with excellent vocals.

When you hear the term “enka singer,” what kind of performer comes to mind?

You might instantly picture a long-standing veteran who’s been singing for decades, but in recent years, thanks to karaoke TV shows and the like, more young singers have emerged, bringing a fresh sense of fun!

As for musical style, there’s been an increase in easy-to-listen-to songs that lean more toward pop these days.

Of course, there are the accomplished veterans, but with the influence of those programs as well, we’ll introduce talented enka singers who are approachable for all generations.

Give them a listen—you’ll likely feel enka become more familiar and appealing!

Reiwa is not to be missed either: Enka singers with great vocals (31–40)

The Beginning of a WomanAoyama Shin

Shin Aoyama, an enka singer from Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, made a spectacular debut as the 60th anniversary commemorative artist for Geiei.

His debut catchphrase was “A 19-year-old straight shooter in song!” and even now he continues to produce many classics in a traditional, orthodox style.

Aoyama’s greatest appeal is, above all, his masculine singing.

His voice is powerful and rugged, and combined with his manly delivery, it’s easy to see why many women find themselves captivated.

If you like enka with a strong, forceful vocal style, be sure to check him out.

Winter JourneyMori Shinichi

Shinichi Mori, a native of Yamanashi Prefecture, is a popular singer known for his distinctive husky voice.

He debuted in 1966 with “Onna no Tameiki” and won the inaugural All Japan Wired Broadcasting Grand Prize with “Sakaba Blues.” He went on to produce numerous hit songs and achieved the remarkable feat of appearing in NHK’s Kōhaku Uta Gassen for 48 consecutive years.

Unbound by the confines of enka, he has actively collaborated with artists from other genres, including Takashi Matsumoto and Tetsuya Komuro.

With his broad musicality, he continues to captivate many fans.

More recently, he released a song commemorating the 55th anniversary of his singing career.

Spanning the Shōwa, Heisei, and Reiwa eras, Shinichi Mori’s voice evokes both nostalgia and freshness.

Anko Camellia is the flower of loveMiyako Harumi

Harumi Miyako is one of the most renowned songstresses in Japan’s enka world.

Born in Kyoto City in 1948, she is known for her powerful singing style, the distinctive “Harumi-bushi.” She debuted in 1964 and released major hits such as “Kita no Yado Kara” and “Osaka Shigure.” At the Japan Record Awards, she achieved a rare triple crown: the Grand Prize, Best New Artist, and Best Vocal Performance.

Although she made a sudden retirement announcement in 1984, she later returned and has also been active as a music producer.

In 2006, she received the Kyoto Prefecture Culture Award for Merit.

With her emotionally rich vocals, Miyako continues to captivate many fans.

Highly recommended for those who want to fully experience the appeal of enka.

Hiroshi Fujiwara is bringing a fresh breeze to the world of enka.

He debuted in 1994, and in 2007 his song “Futari no Shihatsu-eki” became a hot topic as an anthem for the baby-boom generation.

A proven talent with numerous accolades, he has received honors such as the Hachiro Kasuga Encouragement Award and the Matsuo Performing Arts Grand Prize for Newcomers in Popular Music.

His heartfelt stories—his bond with his mentor Minoru Endo and his feelings for his late mother—are also compelling.

In 2009, he released a tribute album to Minoru Endo, and while cherishing enka’s traditions, he performs with a contemporary sensibility.

Fujiwara’s singing is recommended not only for enka fans but also for anyone seeking a new musical encounter.

Tsugaru PlainSen Masao

No matter how many times I listen, this song as sung by Mr.

Sen is truly wonderful.

The lyrics in dialect and the nostalgia-evoking melody make me genuinely grateful to have been born Japanese and able to appreciate the beauty of this piece.

It also makes perfect sense that it was written and composed by Mr.

Yoshi Ikuzo, a disciple of Mr.

Sen.

Unmissable in the Reiwa era too: Enka singers with great vocals (ages 41–50)

Deep, deep snowFuji Ayako

When I think of Akita beauties, Ms.

Fuji is the first person who comes to mind.

She’s incredibly fair-skinned and beautiful, and she conveys the world of such a sultry song brilliantly.

The lyrics are by Miyuki Ishimoto, who is also famous for “Yagiri no Watashi.” You won’t find many women this single-minded in today’s world.

Kenta Koori is another enka singer to keep an eye on.

He’s also known for his unusual background as a former nursery school teacher.

Early on, he reportedly entered various karaoke competitions while working his day job.

His big break came when he won Fukushima TV’s “Tetsuya Gen’s FTV Karaoke Grand Prix,” which led to his debut.

He has remained active, including being appointed a Yoko-zakura Goodwill Ambassador in 2014.

To appreciate his appeal, I recommend the DVD released in 2023 to mark his 15th anniversary, “15th Anniversary MV Collection ~Utogokoro~,” which covers his past works.
