Amazing GraceMahalia Jackson

I think many people in Japan are familiar with the gospel song “Amazing Grace.” In some schools, students even study it as an assigned piece.

The lyrics are said to have been written by the famous British clergyman John Newton.

The composer remains unknown, and it is unclear whether the melody originated as a folk tune from Ireland or Scotland, or whether it was created in the American South.

Sam Cooke’s classic “Touch the Hem of His Garment.” It’s one of my personal favorites.

When I listen to this song, even hardships and pain feel lighter.

There are songs with that kind of power, aren’t there? I think that’s especially true in gospel music.

At first listen, this track may sound like ordinary soul music, but it’s actually a song themed around Jesus Christ.

It was released in 1956, yet it continues to be loved by people all over the world to this day.

Down By the RiversideGospel Dream

“Down By the Riverside,” also famous as a jazz standard.

The song has been arranged in many different ways, but the most well-known version is as a piece of gospel music.

The song is about war, and it carries a meaning like “let’s lay down our arms and stop fighting.” Despite being about war, its melody is very poppy and bright.

It’s a lovely hymn that lets you feel the depth of human love.

When it comes to highly popular gospel music groups, Sounds of Blackness is likely the first name that comes to mind.

They’re renowned for blending gospel with R&B, soul, and various styles of Black music.

Released in 1994, their track “Hold On (Change Is Coming)” is a masterpiece that showcases everything great about them.

In 2015, a brand-new group suddenly emerged on the gospel scene: Anthony Brown and eight singers.

Their sound is heavily influenced by hip-hop, but the message conveyed by their lyrics has moved many people.

Despite being newcomers, their popularity is exploding.
