One of the saxophonists whom the great David Sanborn cites as “most respected” is Hank Crawford, born in 1934.
Not a so-called straight-ahead jazz saxophonist, Crawford made his mark in the 1950s and ’60s with bands such as Ray Charles’s, released many solo works, and became known for scoring hits in genres like disco and funk.
As a sideman, he also appeared on recordings by major artists like B.B.
