The depth of guitar sound. A collection of songs with cool guitar.

The guitar as an instrument originated in Spain around the 16th century.

Since then, and all the way up to the present day, countless masterpieces for guitar have continued to be created around the world.

Today, it may be strongly associated with “rock band instruments,” but there are also many works classified as classical music.

I hope this article conveys, even a little, the guitar’s diversity, its charm, and the wonderful music that springs from it!

It’s also recommended for hobbyist guitarists who are looking for new pieces to tackle.

Sugar Song and Bitter StepUNISON SQUARE GARDEN

UNISON SQUARE GARDEN “Sugar Song and Bitter Step” Short Ver.
Sugar Song and Bitter StepUNISON SQUARE GARDEN

A track by UNISON SQUARE GARDEN featuring an ear-catching, memorable electric guitar phrase in the intro.

The rhythmic sections use a sharp arrangement that makes the melody stand out even more.

The tricky passages feel fantastic, and the sound is irresistible for single-coil fans.

Sky Blue Townsupittsu

A beautiful song that contrasts Masamune Kusano’s clear, transparent vocals with distorted, gritty guitars.

Although the MV’s color palette is dark and the track isn’t flashy, the guitar—centered on distinctive arpeggios—creates a unique atmosphere that’s really intriguing.

The cutting guitar in the chorus is highly rhythmic and plays a big role in further highlighting the song’s appeal.

WonderwallOasis

Oasis – Wonderwall (Official Video)
WonderwallOasis

A masterpiece by the rock band Oasis that begins with that acoustic guitar intro—the one that made rock fans around the world fall in love.

From the verse, which carries a sense of anticipation that something is about to happen, the song unfolds as if light gradually comes into view, making it truly moving.

Apart from the opening, other string instruments like the cello take center stage, but above all, it’s that acoustic guitar intro.

That alone gives you goosebumps.

RideauPorukadotto Sutingurei

Shall we fully experience the sheer pleasure of guitar cutting? This track by Polkadot Stingray—a band known for their crisp, cutting rock sound—appears on their fourth album, “Odoru Yō ni,” released in 2022.

The consistently snappy guitar phrases are quintessential Polkadot Stingray.

The slightly ennui-tinged development in the B melody adds dynamic contrast in a very pleasing way.

Also pay attention to the guitar solo, which perfectly captures the song’s somewhat shadowy worldview.

Transparent GirlNUMBER GIRL

A signature song by Number Girl, a band with a one-of-a-kind worldview: their guitar has a steel-like tone yet an inexplicable warmth.

Despite its gritty, hard-hitting sound, the guitar playing also carries a sense of loneliness and even evokes the feeling of the seasons—surely the very essence of Number Girl’s appeal.

Enigmatic FeelingRin to shite Shigure

A track by Ling tosite sigure, an ultra-virtuosic rock band so far beyond the norm that it defies conventional metrics.

They have many distinctive traits—the high-pitched dual male-female vocals and the relentlessly busy drumming, to name a few—but when it comes to the guitar, I’m stunned that he sings while playing this, and by the sheer brutality of the effects.

It’s truly a masterpiece from a gloriously twisted rock band.

Paranoid AndroidRadiohead

This is a song by Radiohead, a band that consistently leaves a sensational impression with their uniquely expressive style.

It’s hard to pin down a single interpretation of the imagery this track evokes—especially when you factor in the music video’s atmosphere—but the performance that creates this mood is breathtaking.

From the thick, hefty tone of the riffing guitar to the frenzied guitar solo, it’s packed with moments that guitar lovers will find fascinating—a six-and-a-half-minute masterpiece.
