Candy grab

Candy grab

Speaking of Halloween, it’s a classic for kids to come around saying “trick or treat” and get candy, right? If you turn it into a candy grab, it might make for a Halloween that’s a little different from the usual.

If you don’t have a Halloween-themed toy lantern, just use something you have on hand, like a box or a basket, and fill it with candy.

Let the kids grab as much as they like.

You can almost picture their delighted faces when they manage to grab lots of treats.

Decorating the candy box or basket with Halloween-themed decorations will make the atmosphere even better.

Candy scooping game

For kids, Halloween is all about getting treats, right? So let’s try a Halloween-themed candy scooping game.

There’s just one rule: wear a headband with a paper plate attached, balance a ball on top of it, and scoop the candy while keeping the ball in place.

Since the ball can roll off, it makes a simple candy scooping game more challenging and fun.

You can adjust the difficulty by changing the shape of the plate, and it’s also fun to switch up what you use to scoop—like a ladle or a bowl.

Ghost Fishing Game

A “ghost fishing game” using paper cups.

It’s easy to make since you can use things you mostly already have at home, and it’s a game that even little kids can enjoy.

For the fishing rod side, use a slightly smaller paper cup by cutting a cup in half.

Draw jack-o’-lantern faces or stick on origami decorations.

Then, place a white cloth over the cup to be caught to turn it into a ghost.

Hide a magnet inside each ghost.

Put “win” and “lose” items inside the small paper cups and give it a try! For the winning ones, be sure to include treats that the children love.

Candy hunting game

If you’re looking for Halloween games you can play outdoors, why not try a “candy scavenger hunt”? You can do it indoors too, of course, but it’s more fun outside where there’s more space to use.

Preparation is super easy! Just make some candies and hide them somewhere outside.

Then explain the rules to the kids, set a time limit if you like, and let them have fun searching for the treats.

If you can’t hide real candy, try making colorful candies out of construction paper or card stock instead!

Halloween Ring Toss

By giving the classic ring toss game a Halloween twist, you can delight the kids.

It’s easy to make: wrap colored paper around toilet paper rolls to create targets, draw illustrations on them, then cut and spread one end into “feet” and fix them onto construction paper or similar.

Adding Halloween-themed prizes—like giving out candy when someone lands a ring on a target—can really liven up the event.

In practice, it’s a sure-fire recreation that adults can enjoy just as much as children.

Treats? Tricks? Game

Treats? Tricks? Game

This is a game inspired by the familiar Halloween line, “Trick or treat,” which basically means, “Give me candy or I’ll play a trick on you!” To prepare, get two identical containers: put candy in one and slime in the other.

The children then close their eyes and stick a hand into one of the containers.

If it’s candy, they’re lucky; if it’s slime, tough luck.

The slightly mysterious, squishy feel of the slime really adds to the Halloween vibe.

Steal the snacks! Red Light, Green Light

An old game called “Daruma-san ga koronda.” Let’s adapt it with a Halloween twist and play! Place candy directly behind the ‘oni’ (the tagger).

Just like in the original, you can walk or move while the oni is facing away, but if you move even a little when the oni turns around, you’re out! Sneak up without being noticed, grab the candy behind the oni, and return to the starting point.

If you get caught moving, put the candy back and start over from the starting point.
