Crown of Wildflowers

No need for any complicated folding! This is a flower-and-grass–themed crown that’s easy to make by cutting and gluing.

Cut a sheet of construction paper into a rectangle and snip fine slits to create a grassy base.

Glue a piece of cardstock onto the unslit section to add strength, then roll the strip into a ring and use a pen or similar tool to curl the slit sections.

Finally, attach flower-shaped pieces to the grassy part, and your whimsical crown is complete! Its natural, super-cute look makes it perfect for kindergarten or preschool performances.

Using corrugated cardboard, you can make a crown that’s even sturdier than one made from origami or construction paper! All you have to do is cut colorful craft cardboard according to a template and attach the pieces with a stapler or glue.

Finish by decorating it with sparkly, gem-like stickers, and you’ll have a cute, durable crown.

The striped ridges of the cardboard give it a more intricate look, too.

When using a stapler, take safety precautions: cover staples with tape so they don’t touch the head, or use staples only in spots that won’t be visible from the outside.

A petite crown that perches on the head is adorable not only for the star of the show to wear, but also to place on a gifted stuffed animal! If you’re making it with origami, first fold the paper in half twice to create a cross-shaped crease.

Then open it into a tall rectangle, fold the bottom edge up along the creases, and shape it into a crown.

Finally, open it up and adjust the shape to finish.

Because the design lets the back side peek through the triangular gaps of the crown, using double-sided origami paper with colors or patterns on both sides is highly recommended!

Four-part crown

I want to make a crown out of origami that’s easy to craft yet sturdy enough not to fall apart at the slightest touch! In that case, I recommend a handmade crown assembled firmly from four parts.

First, crease the paper with a cross (a vertical and horizontal fold), then fold the top left and right corners in toward the center.

Next, fold the left edge to align with the center line, fold up the bottom edge, and tuck its corner into the small triangular pocket that forms.

Make four identical parts, connect them by slotting them into each other, and you’re done! Using four parts creates a petite crown that sits neatly on the head.

If you want a crown with more presence, try increasing the number of parts you connect.

The great thing about paper crowns is that you can make them from all kinds of materials—newspaper, wrapping paper, wax paper, and more! Even a large sheet of newspaper can be turned into a splendid crown by folding it in half, aligning the left and right edges to the center, opening it into a pouch shape, and continuing to fold.

If you use larger sheets like newspaper or wrapping paper, the finished crown will also be larger, making it perfect for adults to wear.

If you’re using plain paper, try decorating it lavishly with stickers, lace, and other embellishments.
