Handmade candle ideas: how to make them and ways to customize (1–10)
Marshmallow Marble Candle

A square candle with a soft, marshmallow-like texture.
The white-based marble colors are lovely too, aren’t they? First, mix paraffin wax with bayberry wax and melt them.
Once melted, divide the wax into as many paper cups as the number of colors you want to make, and add pigment to each.
When it starts to set, whip it, then quickly spread it into a clear container with a spoon.
Next, apply a generous layer of white whip, set the wick in the center, and fill in the rest with the white whip or melted paraffin wax.
Adding a sweet fragrance would make it even more delightful!

When you think of candle-making, it might seem serious and intimidating, but it’s actually easier than you think! Prepare a Christmas tree–shaped mold made of silicone or similar material, make a hole at the top, and thread a candle wick through it.
Melt paraffin wax with heat and add pigment—crayons work well—to color the tree.
Once it’s fully melted, pour it into the mold, and when it hardens, your candle is ready.
Melt a small amount of paraffin wax, shave in a white crayon, and melt it to create “snow” to place on top.
You can also use decorating pens made for candles to add details.
gel candle

Here’s a handmade gel candle idea that creates a soothing atmosphere.
You’ll need a candle container, gel wax, and a candle wick.
After thoroughly removing any dust from the container, warm the gel and pour it in.
Place the wick in the center.
Since it may topple over if left as is, secure it upright by clamping it with something like chopsticks laid across the top.
Once the gel sets, your candle is complete.
Tie some jute twine around the container or decorate it with your favorite embellishments—it could make a lovely gift for a friend!
Botanical candle

Botanical candles are very popular as interior decor.
Let’s try making one using items sold at 100-yen shops.
Break a stick candle into about half and put it into the container that originally held cotton swabs, then place the rest of the candle in a pot and heat to melt.
Pour the melted wax into the cotton swab container, insert a wick, and let it set.
Next, place the hardened wax in the center of a larger cotton swab container than the one you prepared first, and add dried flowers around it.
You don’t need many flowers, but be careful not to add too many or the wax won’t be able to penetrate.
Pour in the melted wax, and once it has completely cooled and solidified, it’s done.
It’s a piece that’s sure to delight whether you make it for yourself or as a gift.
Sunflower botanical candle

A botanical candle with dried flowers inside.
The colors of the flowers are vivid, and it makes a lovely interior accent.
As for how to make it, this candle consists of an outer layer with flowers and an inner layer without flowers, so prepare molds in two sizes.
First, make a plain white candle with a wick in the smaller mold.
Once it has set, move it to the larger mold, place dried flowers around the outside inside the larger mold, and pour in the candle wax.
The key is to remove any air bubbles after pouring.
This example uses white wax, but depending on the flowers, adding a little color could be cute as well.
Antique crack candle

Speaking of candles, antique-style ones are popular in Western designs, aren’t they? Here, we’ll make a handmade candle with a “crack” design that looks like fine fractures.
The main material is soy wax, a natural plant-based wax made primarily from soybean oil.
It’s also used for aroma candles and can even be found at 100-yen shops.
After melting and setting the soy wax, place it into ice water mixed with black ink, and black fissures will form in the candle.
This creates a cool, antique vibe.
Canelé candle

Delicious cannelé pastries.
How about making candles that look just like them? You can light them, or simply display them as cute interior decor.
You can get everything you need at a 100-yen shop.
First, prepare a silicone cannelé mold.
After melting the wax, use crayons to add color.
Once you’ve colored the inside, pour it into the mold and let it cool.
When it has cooled, use a brush to paint the browned exterior.
When you light it, the inner color gradually shows through, which looks lovely.
