Cut-and-paste felt carp streamers

Here’s a craft idea for making carp streamers (koinobori) using just cut-and-paste felt.

It’s easy to make and looks very cute! For the koinobori, cut a piece of felt into a long, narrow shape, glue on pom-poms to represent the scales, add an eye, then wrap it around a pole to finish.

For the pinwheel at the top of the stick, cut a square out of felt, make four slits from the corners toward the center, and fold every other corner inward to form the shape.

For the streamers, cut felt into long strips and glue them together with a slight overlap.

Since they’re mini-sized, you can display them anywhere!

Try making a torn-paper collage using patterned origami.

The torn pieces will become the carp streamer’s scales and create a lovely texture.

Paste the torn origami onto construction paper, then cut it into the shape of a carp streamer.

You can cut it using a carp streamer template, or draw the carp streamer on the back of the paper and cut along the lines.

Tearing paper takes a bit of technique.

It might be nice to chat about tips—like twisting your fingers as you tear—while you work.

It can also be a great way to communicate with your child.

If you make a piece with three-dimensional scales, you can create a dignified, imposing koi-nobori.

The scales on a koi-nobori are often shaped like half-circles, right? Cut origami into strips, make them into loops, and paste them onto the scale section of the koi-nobori.

Using origami with patterns on both sides will let you create a style that suits a luxurious koi-nobori.

It’s also fine to glue together regular origami with white backs to make double-sided paper.

If you offset the loops as you place them, you can achieve a different look.

Try making it together with children, using your hands and fingers.

With such splendid scales, it may look as if it’s grandly swimming through the sky.
