As a mask motif, Hyottoko is a classic! Many people probably want to make one.
Here are some ideas for creating a Hyottoko mask using stone clay.
Use a plastic mask with a paper plate added to the forehead area to build the base.
Once the base is ready, add volume with the remaining clay.
It’s recommended to make the distinctive round eyes and the long, narrow mouth as separate parts and combine them later.
After it dries, paint it with acrylics!
[Paper Plate] Monster Mask

Perfect for anyone who wants to make an easy Halloween mask! Here’s an idea for a monster mask made from a paper plate.
First, cut the paper plate in half and cut out holes for the eyes and nose.
Paint it your favorite color, then attach horns and eyes to finish it off! If you add a wooden skewer or chopstick, it can be used as a photo prop, and if you punch holes on both sides and thread a rubber band through, you can hook it over your ears and wear it on your face.
Start by imagining what kind of monster you want to make, then give it a try!
Mask photo props

Easy to make and perfect for photos: mask-style photo props.
This one is inspired by an oni (Japanese ogre).
Leave the rim of a paper plate and cut out the upper half of the inner section with a craft knife.
Glue crumpled tissue paper along the upper half of the rim to create the oni’s hair.
Make the horns from construction paper, and attach pom-poms to the nose and cheeks.
Finally, draw the mouth and fangs, secure a chopstick as a handle, and you’re done! You can adapt this idea to many different themes, so please use it as inspiration and give it a try.

Venetian mask

A Venetian mask is a type of mask worn during the Carnival held in Venice, Italy.
With its dazzling decorations and truly artistic look, the Venetian mask is also popular as a souvenir.
This time, we’re introducing handmade ideas for Venetian masks.
In this example, a store-bought mask is used, colored with spray paint, and decorated with patterns drawn using a design pen.
It’s then adorned with decorative cord and jewel stickers for a glamorous finish.
The design is entirely up to you, so feel free to use your favorite Venetian masks as inspiration and give it a try.
Masks made from construction paper

This is a headband-style mask for kids.
You’ll use construction paper and rubber bands.
Draw a face—an animal, a ghost, or any motif you like—on the construction paper, color it in, and cut it out with scissors.
From a separate sheet of black construction paper, make a long, narrow belt.
Adjust its length to fit the child’s head and fold both ends.
Hook rubber bands onto the folded parts and staple them so they won’t come off.
Attach the face you made earlier to the belt, and it’s done! Since staples can be sharp and catch on things, cover them with tape for safety.
origami mask

Masks are perfect items for seasonal events.
Not only do they let you enjoy the traditions of the season, but simply putting one on can liven up the atmosphere.
This time, we’re introducing masks made from origami.
Speaking of Setsubun, it’s all about oni (demons).
Wearing an oni mask is said to help drive away evil.
These masks are easy to make with origami, so they’re highly recommended.
By changing the size of the paper, you can make a mask that fits a person’s face, so both children and adults can enjoy them.
paper bag mask

Here are some ideas for making masks using paper bags.
Prepare a paper bag that fits your head and cut off the handles.
Cut out openings for the eyes, then use torn flyers or origami paper to add hair, eyes, a nose, and a mouth.
Instead of neatly cutting the parts with scissors, tearing them by hand gives them more character.
Gather various flyers and colored origami paper, trust your sense of style, and give it a try.
Since you just wear the paper bag over your head, it’s easy to put on, and you won’t have trouble disposing of it afterward.
