[Make with Kids] Handmade Outdoor Play Toy Special

This time, we’re introducing handmade toys that are fun for outdoor play.

Many of the ideas use familiar materials and recyclables, and we also feature lots of nostalgic, traditional toys—like stilts and paper airplanes—that adults may remember fondly.

Since they’re handmade, you can draw pictures, add stickers, and customize them any way you like!

Be sure to enjoy creating your own original decorations.

We also introduce toys that use the power of the wind, so make the most of nature’s energy and have fun playing!

Soap bubble play

[Simple Craft 056] Big Soap Bubble Rod
Soap bubble play

Let’s make your very own bubble wand! Here are some bubble ideas for you.

You’ll need thick yarn, wooden chopsticks, tape, vinyl (electrical) tape, and scissors.

When you think of bubbles, do you imagine blowing gently to send them floating? This time, let’s use yarn and chopsticks to make your own bubble rod! Cut the yarn to a length of 2 meters and tie three knots along it.

Attach the yarn to the chopsticks with tape, and you’re done.

Dip it into bubble solution, and the wind will help you make bubbles!

kite flying

“Homemade Toy” This is a handmade kite you can make using only things you have at home! It’s quick and easy! You can even play with it the same day! Try making it with someone at home!
kite flying

Here’s an idea for a kite you can make from plastic that flies really high.

Get a plastic bag with handles, then cut off the handles and the bottom.

Since it’s a bag, cut along one side to open it up.

Fold it in half and cut it into a symmetrical kite shape.

Attach straws vertically on the left and right sides to make the frame.

Thread yarn or kite string through the top left and right corners, and it’s done.

Feel free to draw pictures or stick stickers on the plastic.

Take it to a large park or open square and have fun flying it!

batting machine

[Playable Craft] Batting Machine! Staggered Launch! <Make it Now • Handmade Toy> [Easy Craft] Cardboard, Paper Cups, Construction Paper
batting machine

Let’s have fun syncing our timing! Here’s an idea for a batting machine.

You’ll need two paper cups, rubber bands, construction paper, cardboard, a plastic bottle with a cap, origami paper, a ping-pong ball, tissue paper, tape, a pencil, and scissors.

Some steps can be a bit tricky, so it’s best to work together with a parent or teacher.

Try adjusting the tension of the rubber bands to change the timing and height of the ball’s launch!

Balloon Rocket

[Easy Craft 048] Balloon Rocket: Let's make it float and fly high
Balloon Rocket

Fun to make and fun to play! Here’s how to make a high-flying balloon rocket.

First, if your straw has a bendy part, cut off the accordion section.

If it doesn’t, trim it just a little shorter.

Next, to make it easier to attach to the straw, cut the balloon’s neck at about 1.2 cm.

Insert the straw into the balloon and secure it with cellophane tape.

Make fins from construction paper in any size you like and attach them to the straw.

Since the balloon will inflate, stick the fins slightly lower on the straw, and you’re done! Hold the balloon while inflating it, then let go and it will fly! If it doesn’t fly well, try wrapping some cellophane tape around it to add a little weight.

PET bottle water gun

Let's make a water gun with a plastic bottle
PET bottle water gun

Recycle a plastic bottle into a water gun! You can easily make this with a plastic bottle container.

First, use an awl to make a hole in the bottle cap that’s just big enough for a straw to fit through.

Once the hole is made, insert the straw and screw the cap back on.

That’s all it takes to finish, but feel free to decorate the bottle with stickers or vinyl tape however you like.

To use it, fill the bottle with water and squeeze the container—it’ll work like a water gun! For infants whose grip strength is still developing and might find squeezing difficult, we recommend using tea or water bottles, which tend to be softer and easier to press.

Bouncing balloon ball

[Easy Craft 024] Balloon Ball – Just like a bouncy beach ball!? Balloon Ball
Bouncing balloon ball

It bounces like a beach ball and is so much fun! It doesn’t hurt when it hits you, making it perfect for playing outside.

Here’s how to make a balloon ball.

First, inflate a balloon to about the size of your palm.

Wrap the balloon with vinyl tape.

Start at the top of the balloon and stick the tape straight down toward the knot, wrapping it all the way around once.

Rotate it 90 degrees and do the same.

Then add two more wraps in the spaces between in the same way.

Turn the balloon sideways and wrap one band horizontally around the middle, and you’re done! It’s hard to pop, so it’s great for games at events and highly recommended.

A paper airplane that flies well

How to make a square paper airplane that flies long without falling – easy, well-flying origami folding method [Origami]
A paper airplane that flies well

You can make it with a single sheet of origami paper! Here’s how to fold a paper airplane that flies long and steady without dropping.

First, place the origami paper face up and fold it in half into a square to make a crease.

Fold two corners in to meet the center line, then fold the tip up to the middle.

Fold so that the white side shows along the center.

Fold both slanted edges down to align with the bottom edge.

Fold down the top layer in front, matching the corner.

Slightly fold up the edge you just folded.

Repeat the same steps on the other side, adjust the shape, and it’s done!
