[Handmade] Let's play with shuriken! A collection of homemade target practice ideas
What comes to mind when you hear the word ninja?
Most people probably think of shuriken.
This time, I’ll share a handmade target practice idea you can enjoy using shuriken.
Shuriken can be made from everyday materials like origami paper or cardboard, so try making lots of them!
It’s no fun if you can’t throw them after making them, so use this article as a reference to create your favorite target practice setup.
The throwing distance and speed change depending on how you throw the shuriken and its orientation, so channel your inner ninja and master shuriken throwing!
[Handmade] Let’s Play with Shuriken! A Collection of DIY Target Practice Ideas (1–10)
Target made with newspaper and paper cups

Simple steps are the best! Here’s an idea for making a target using just a newspaper and a paper cup.
Using lots of materials to make a complicated target can take a lot of time, right? This is a great idea for when you want to play right now! All you need is a paper cup and newspaper.
Make a round balloon out of the newspaper and place it on top of the paper cup—that’s it! Once you get the hang of it, making the balloon smaller could be fun, too.
Try customizing the target while you play! In the video, we use an extending sword, but it could also work well as a target for throwing stars (shuriken).
Target made of cardboard

Let’s make something simple with items you have at home! Here are ideas for making targets out of cardboard.
Many people may think making a target is difficult, but with this idea, you can create one using simple steps! You’ll need cardboard, a utility knife or scissors, masking tape or vinyl tape, and a pen.
After cutting the cardboard into circles, triangles, or squares, cover the cut edges with masking or vinyl tape.
Write the points with a pen, and you’re done! When you actually play, you’ll find it’s surprisingly challenging and a lot of fun.
Demon Target Practice

Let’s try making the target out of origami too! Here’s an idea for a devil-themed target practice.
Many of you are probably good at origami.
It’s great for developing dexterity, so I recommend it! This time, let’s make a devil target you’ll want to quickly take down with a shuriken and have some fun.
You’ll need origami paper in your favorite colors, plus pens or colored pencils.
If you add a scary face to the finished devil, it might help you get into the spirit of taking down the bad guy.
When the shuriken hits, it collapses with a flop, which makes it really fun!
Target game made from a milk carton

Let’s make a target at home with things you already have! Here’s an idea for a target game using a milk carton.
Milk cartons are a great material because, with a bit of creativity, you can turn them into all kinds of homemade toys.
This time, we’ll make a shuriken (throwing star) target using a milk carton.
You’ll need a milk carton, scissors, and a motif made from drawings or construction paper.
Just cut the milk carton and set the pieces down, and they transform into a target! It’s also fun that you can attach your favorite illustrations or motifs.
a spinning target

Also great for shuriken practice! Here’s an idea for a spinning target.
Hitting a target with a shuriken can be tricky, right? This is a fantastic idea for when you think, “I want to practice!” What you’ll need: two milk cartons, two bamboo skewers, a straw, construction paper, scissors, glue, a pen, an awl, and craft adhesive.
The mechanism that spins when the shuriken hits is unique and fun! If you’re making it with children, be careful when handling the awl and bamboo skewers.
Target practice with a bag stuffed with cotton

Get the party going at events! Here’s a fun target game idea using bags stuffed with cotton.
Many people host parties for occasions like Christmas or Halloween, right? In those moments, try a group game that uses event-themed motifs to amp up the excitement.
All you need are gift bags, cotton, and ribbon.
If you don’t have patterned gift bags, drawing illustrations on clear bags with a marker works great, too! It’s a fun idea with lots of room for customization.
In the video, an air cannon is used, but it also looks like it could double as a target for throwing paper shuriken.
Wobbly Ghost

Let’s toss shuriken at the ghosts! Here’s a fun idea for wobbling ghosts.
Ghosts are usually seen as scary, but let’s use construction paper to make cute ghost targets! You’ll need balloons, construction paper, twine, ribbon (raffia/suzuran tape), scissors, glue, tape, and colored pens.
The ghosts hanging from the twine sway back and forth, so it’ll be tricky to aim with your shuriken.
Making the ghosts together with your kids is part of the fun, too!

It’s fun and fresh—shuriken you don’t even throw by hand! To make the launcher, prepare cardboard, wooden chopsticks, craft glue, and rubber bands.
Fold construction paper to make the target.
A device that lets kids who made their own shuriken play even more enthusiastically is really appealing, right? Adjust the size of the target to increase the difficulty!
A target game you can play on a desk
https://www.tiktok.com/@hirose_ds/video/6880261546316991746No elaborate prep needed! Here’s a fun tabletop target game you can try anytime.
We all want to play, but if getting ready is a hassle, it’s hard to get started.
This idea is perfect for those times! All you need are empty toilet paper rolls or aluminum foil cores.
Line them up along the edge of the table and slide your “shuriken” to aim at the targets! Using the cores as-is works fine, but if you wrap them with washi-pattern origami or yarn to make them look like scrolls, it’ll boost the mood even more.
Balloon target shooting
https://www.tiktok.com/@mami_toys/video/7198592903562693890Perfect for events! Here’s a fun balloon target game.
Balloons are soothing to watch as they gently float up when you tap them.
They also make great targets for paper shuriken—so it’s extra fun! All you need are balloons in your favorite colors and some string.
If you want to make the shuriken shown in the video, prepare some origami paper too.
When the sharp tip of a shuriken hits a balloon, it can pop with a loud bang, so be mindful of the location and time when you play.
Give it a try!
