I want to decorate in summer! Handmade garland ideas

When summer comes, you can’t help wanting to decorate with cool, refreshing interiors to take the edge off the heat.

In this article, we’re introducing ideas for handmade summer garlands! A garland is a string-like decoration that’s popular as a wall ornament.

These days, it’s also a staple for birthday decorations.

We’ll share lots of ideas that capture the feeling of summer—using seasonal materials like shells and starfish, as well as motifs inspired by summer flavors and events—so feel free to use them as a reference and give them a try.

Ideas for Handmade Garlands to Decorate in Summer (1–10)

sunflower

Sunflowers, the quintessential summer flower, instantly brighten your mood! How about making a sunflower-themed garland for the summer? You can customize it freely—cut and paste construction paper or origami, or sew felt and fabric.

Rather than using just one shade of yellow or orange, combining a few colors or adding patterned materials as accents will give it a stylish finish.

If you’re turning it into a garland, you could use jute twine or ribbon, and add wooden clothespins for an extra touch of originality!

Sea creatures

How about a cute ocean-themed garland for summer? Starfish, hermit crabs, seahorses, garden eels—so many sea creatures with distinctive looks come to mind! It’s also great to make with your kids, so give it a try.

The basics are simply cutting and pasting origami or construction paper.

Try crafting each creature with its characteristic silhouette in mind.

You can hang them in a row horizontally or vertically, depending on the size of your wall.

Using not only solid-color origami but also patterned or glittery paper as accents will give it a stylish finish!

lantern

This is a lantern garland that’s perfect for summer events like festivals and Bon Odori! Make lots of colorful lanterns and hang them up—the festive atmosphere is guaranteed to liven up.

Cut slits in origami paper, glue the band section onto a backing paper with a gentle curve, then finish by attaching the opposite edge so it forms a lantern shape.

Punch two holes at the top and thread a string through to turn it into a garland.

Using glitter origami or chiyogami will give your creation a unique, original touch.

Pineapple

Let’s make a pineapple-themed garland that’s perfect for summer parties and events! The three-dimensional pineapples are super cute.

We’ll use honeycomb sheets, which are ideal for 3D creations and have a beehive-like look.

It’s helpful to prepare templates for the pineapple shape and the fruit section in advance! Simply take a backing cut into a pineapple shape, spread out a honeycomb sheet cut into half-fruit shapes, and clip it in place—you’re done.

You can create 3D decorations very easily, so give it a try! When displaying it as a garland on a wall, it will look lovely decorated together with flowers like hibiscus.

Detailed instructions are here 💁🏻‍♀️ [What you need] • Tissue paper (flower paper) • Air-dry clay • Construction paper • Paper plates (optional👌) • Washi tape The wooden clip garland I used was from Seria! Daiso doesn’t have a set, so you’ll need to buy the clips and jute twine separately, but if you want to choose how many to hang, buying them separately is recommended 🙌🏻 [Tips for making] If the clay and construction paper come apart, once the clay dries, just glue the construction paper back on with craft glue and you’re good! [Skills kids build] • Learning the right amount of pressure → When sticking tissue paper into the clay, push too hard and it sinks, too shallow and it falls out 🥺 • Design sense → Having many colors makes you think about where to place each one! • Concentration → I was totally zoned out doing this 🤩 That kind of deep engagement also boosts focus for learning • Observation → Check for any gaps It’s starting to get warm, so this hydrangea garland is perfect for giving your home a touch of summer 🥰 It looks fun to make with kids, too 🩷 Give it a try❣️#AtHomePlay#kidscraft#Summer Vacation#Garland#Hydrangea

Three-dimensional and beautiful! Here are some hydrangea craft ideas.

If you’ve thought about making hydrangeas but felt that the prep might be a hassle, you’re not alone.

This time, let’s try a hydrangea garland made with paper clay and tissue paper.

You’ll need tissue paper, scissors, lightweight paper clay, construction paper, masking tape, and wooden skewers or chopsticks.

After cutting the tissue paper into hydrangea-shaped flowers, gently stick them into flattened, rounded pieces of paper clay.

Secure with masking tape, and you’re done!
