Formed in 1983 around BABY, the bassist who had been in the legend of Japanese hardcore, THE EXECUTE, the early lineup was reportedly fluid.

The following year, vocalist BAKI—who likewise left THE EXECUTE—joined, solidifying the members and kicking off full-scale activity.

Leaving behind countless anecdotes and even expanding overseas, their contribution to Japan’s rock scene is immeasurable.

Their sound defies simple description, but even listening to their classic GERONIMO—the final encore song of their last live—should be enough to grasp the band’s outstanding individuality and talent.

human huntingTHE COMES

Emerging in the early 1980s and ushering in the dawn of Japanese hardcore punk, THE COMES were hailed as one of Tokyo’s “Four Kings of Hardcore.” Among the members were guitarist NAOKI and bassist MINORU, who would later form Lip Cream.

Perhaps the band’s most distinctive feature was having a female vocalist, CHITOSE.

Their 1983 debut album, NO SIDE, is an astonishing masterpiece where the overpowering personalities of the early lineup explode.

Even on an album with no filler, the track “Human Hunting” (Ningen Gari), shocking from its title alone, stands out as a supreme classic—metallic yet catchy guitars, a melodic bassline, a breathless two-beat drive, and an onslaught of outrageous lyrics and screams.

FrustrationZOUO

Even just a band name that means “hatred” tells you how intense they are.

ZOUO, the legendary band born from Osaka’s hardcore scene, was formed in 1981 by members who were still in their teens.

Although the recordings they left behind during their brief existence amount to fewer than 20 tracks, they are regarded as vital works in the history of Japanese hardcore.

This time, we’re featuring the classic “Frustration,” which appeared on the most important Japanese hardcore compilation, Hardcore Illegal Assembly, released in 1984, and was reissued as a 7-inch single in 2011.

Beyond the reckless power of youth, the track’s completeness is startling: from the intro that starts with a collage of crowd noise and a whistle, to the noisy guitars, malevolent vocals, and a singular sense of darkness.
