An aggressive track by the hardcore band SAND from Osaka, included on their album “Spit On Authority,” released in October 2013.

The strikingly confrontational lyrics seem to call out other artists, while the brutal, heavy sound shakes your eardrums.

SAND is active both in Japan and overseas, and their live performances—creating a powerful sense of unity with the crowd—are a must-see.

Highly recommended not only for hardcore fans but also for anyone seeking the essence of music.

This song is characterized by a fierce sound full of anger and defiance.

It’s one of Kikijiru’s signature works, included on the EP “Hello-Good Bye,” released in September 1985.

In contrast to its aggressive sound and performance, the straightforward lyrics expressing feelings for a loved one are striking.

Their music went beyond mere entertainment and had a significant impact on youth culture at the time.

Their energetic live performances created a compelling sense of unity that drew the audience in.

Since they’re signed to PIZZA OF DEATH RECORDS, many people may know them—even those who usually don’t listen to hardcore punk, including melodic punk fans.

Their track “BLACK OR WHITE” is one of their live staples.

It’s characterized by melodic guitar riffs, a driving, fast-paced drum beat, and powerful vocals.

If you haven’t listened to MEANING yet, starting with this song will surely get you hooked on their appeal.

GRASSHOPPERCOCOBAT

Centered around TAKE-SHIT, the bassist who is both the only original member and a standout technician, the band cocobat formed in 1991 and has earned immense popularity and high acclaim not only in Japan but overseas as well.

Anchored by TAKE-SHIT’s ferocious slap bass, their unique groove metal/crossover sound fuses the aggression of hardcore with the chugging riffs derived from thrash metal, leaving a major mark on subsequent bands.

GRASSHOPPER, included on their acclaimed fourth album from 1996, Return Of Grasshopper—often hailed by fans as their masterpiece—is truly a signature classic among classics.

The performance by HIDEKI, who joined as the new vocalist, is also outstanding, making it an undeniably badass track!

The EXECUTE – laughin child (1982 Video)

The Execute is one of the most prominent, quintessential bands in Japan’s hardcore scene.

Every member is highly skilled, and especially the central figure, Lemmy, captivates with guitar work that goes beyond straight power chords, drawing on metallic phrases and a wide range of ideas.

They’re also famous for having had bassist BABY, who later formed GASTUNK, and vocalist BAKI, who likewise joined GASTUNK and is known for his work with MOSQUITO SPIRAL.

Though they didn’t leave a large discography, their 7-inch single released in 1983 features the track “Laughin’ Child,” which, in just over a minute—and including Japanese lyrics—clearly showcases the powerful individuality of the members.

Indie Rock Strikes BackBBQ CHICKENS

This band was formed around Ken Yokoyama—guitarist of Hi-STANDARD and CEO of PIZZA OF DEATH RECORDS—who has continued to influence Japan’s punk scene since the ’90s.

Unlike Hi-Standard’s melodic punk, their sound is rooted in what’s known as fastcore: extremely fast, short bursts of hardcore punk.

Their landmark debut album, Indie Rock Strikes Back, released in 2001, crams in 19 tracks yet doesn’t even reach 20 minutes—truly a barrage of fast, short tunes.

Give a listen to Big Mac, a track with a title anyone can relate to, and feel with your whole body the kind of sound they’re unleashing!

Outo – Honest people are made fools of (EP 1987)
An honest person is made to look like a fool.OUTO

This band was astonishingly formed when they were still in junior high school, centered around Butcher, the younger brother of Cerry—the vocalist of Osaka legends ZOUO.

If the older brother is “hatred,” the younger is “vomit”; that fierce sensibility is truly brilliant.

Once again, the achievements these brothers left in the history of Japanese hardcore are absolutely monumental.

Even as middle schoolers, OUTO contributed a track to the historic compilation album Hardcore Illegal Assembly.

In their early days they had a noisy, breakneck hardcore sound, but the song Honestly, Suckers—which makes a huge impact from the title alone—showcases OUTO’s unique appeal: solid guitars, Japanese lyrics that stab at your ears, and aggressive vocals.

If you like this track, be sure to check out their later self-titled complete discography release!
