About lightGRAPEVINE

GRAPEVINE – About the Light (Official Live Video)
About lightGRAPEVINE

The late 1990s was a critically important period for Japan’s alternative rock scene.

In the midst of the CD bubble, when million-sellers were dropping almost every week, a wave of brilliant bands and artists emerged, expressing—in real time—their influences from contemporary Western music as their own sound.

GRAPEVINE, introduced in this piece, is one of Japan’s foremost bands of that era, known for their alternative rock.

Formed in Osaka in 1993, they made their major debut in 1997 with the mini-album Kakusei.

They broke through with their second album, Lifetime, released in 1999, which included classic tracks like Slow and Hikari ni Tsuite, and since then they’ve remained stalwarts of Japanese rock, widely respected by their peers.

Centered on an emotional guitar sound that distills influences from various genres—particularly UK rock—the lyrics and melodies crafted by frontman Kazumasa Tanaka, grounded in literary sophistication, have reached a truly singular realm.

They are, without question, a great band worthy of being called a treasure of Japanese alternative rock.
