[High-pitched warning!] Songs with high notes that are hard to sing
The Japanese music scene is known for having a relatively low emphasis on groove, but an unusually large number of high-pitched songs.
In particular, since Japan has finally started earnestly incorporating overseas music in recent years, the overall level of songs has risen dramatically.
With that in mind, this time we’ve picked out Japanese songs that are on the higher side.
From songs with a wide vocal range, to tracks that have pinpoint high parts, to songs that stay in the high register throughout, we selected from a broad set of perspectives—so be sure to find the tracks that suit you!

[High Notes Warning!] High-Pitched Songs That Are Hard to Sing (41–50)
Northern CrossMay’n

This is a song by Sheryl, the diva from the anime Macross Frontier.
It’s a great track where a high-quality melody—hard to believe it’s from an anime song—and an overwhelming vocal performance are perfectly matched.
The tempo is fast and the key is high, so it’s difficult to sing unless you have a high voice.
[High Pitch Alert!] Difficult High-Range Songs to Sing (51–60)
A Naked Heartaimyon

It’s Aimyon’s 10th single, released in June 2020.
You might not associate Aimyon with particularly piercing high tones, but the high notes in this song are truly outstanding.
Especially at the end of the chorus where the song title is sung—the way she skillfully switches between chest voice high notes and falsetto is nothing short of brilliant! Just hearing this part makes it clear that Aimyon doesn’t use falsetto merely as a “cop-out.” It might be challenging even if you’re simply good at high notes, but I’d love to see women who are confident with their upper range take on singing this track!
lilacMrs. GREEN APPLE

Mrs.
GREEN APPLE is also famous as a band with many high notes.
Since vocalist Mr.
Omori has an exceptionally wide vocal range for a male singer, many people may feel that Mrs.
GREEN APPLE’s songs are generally difficult.
Among their catalog, the track I especially recommend for its striking high notes is Lilac.
It’s not an extremely high-pitched song overall, but a falsetto appears in a part of the chorus that’s hard to gloss over.
Without solid vocal technique, it’s quite a challenging song to sing.
Premium salted grilled Kuroge Wagyu tongue 680 yenOtsuka Ai

The opening lyrics are striking.
Even if they know it’s just a song, the men you go to karaoke with might find their hearts skipping a beat for a moment.
It was released in 2005 as Ai Otsuka’s seventh single.
Speaking of Ai Otsuka, she’s known for her cute, high-pitched voice.
When you sing it, be sure to go all-in on the cuteness.
familieMrs. GREEN APPLE

Mrs.
GREEN APPLE’s song “familie.” Released as their latest track in August 2024, it’s already become popular among young people for its catchy sound.
Despite that catchiness, the vocal line is surprisingly difficult.
It may sound light and effortless when you listen, but it uses a lot of falsetto, with frequent switches between chest voice and falsetto.
If you’re confident in your falsetto, definitely give it a try.
idolYOASOBI

This is YOASOBI’s 19th digital single, released in April 2023.
It’s used as the opening theme for the TV anime Oshi no Ko.
In the original track, the vocals feature a distinctly Vocaloid-like singing style and sound processing.
When singing this at karaoke, the key challenge is how well you can reproduce that “mechanical” feel.
I think it really comes down to that.
Study the original carefully and practice balancing the “human” feel in the spoken-like parts with the “mechanical” feel in the melodic sections.
Of course, precise pitch and rhythm are essential, which makes it quite difficult—but if you can pull it off, you’re sure to draw attention from everyone around you!
Feeling great!!miharu GT

This is the ninth single by miharu GT, a Japanese male-female music duo, released in March 2006.
Since it’s been used in commercials and as ending themes for TV programs, many of you may have heard it before.
True to its title, it’s a very light and pleasant track that lifts your mood just by listening! The vocalist hiroko’s voice is also wonderfully rich in high-order overtones and very captivating—many high-voiced female singers may aspire to a voice like this.
The vocal track seems to be sound-designed to have a slightly processed, mechanical feel, but when you sing it at karaoke, don’t worry too much about that—just have fun singing!
