[Hip-Hop Classics] Timeless HIPHOP / Golden Oldies

Hip-hop hadn’t been very popular in Japan for a long time, but it’s recently started getting attention, thanks in part to the spread of MC battles.

That said, even if people know recent tracks, many might not be familiar with the older ones.

So this time, we’ve picked out some classic hip-hop tracks recommended for those listeners.

We’ve mainly chosen songs from the 1980s to the 2000s, so you can also get a sense of hip-hop’s history.

Please take your time and enjoy.

[Hip-Hop Classic] Standard HIPHOP: Timeless Masterpieces (41–50)

In My FeelingsDrake

Drake’s mega-hit song that became a worldwide sensation in 2018.

It caught fire on social media and trended under the names “#InMyFeelingsChallenge” and “#KikiChallenge.” While it was primarily a dance challenge at first, a trend emerged where people jumped out of moving cars and danced alongside them.

It escalated into a social phenomenon, with numerous injuries reported.

That’s how massive the hit was.

The minimalist production and deeply resonant bass are masterful.

It has a very cheerful vibe.

Amine’s quirky atmosphere is intriguing, and watching the music video makes you chuckle without realizing it.

With a bright, pop-like melody, I think it’s a track that both beginners and hardcore fans can get into.

This is the lead single from Juice WRLD’s second album, A Deathrace for Love, released in March 2019! Centered on heartbreak, the song Robbery, which means “robbery,” is about what his girlfriend took from him.

Its piano-based track combined with his distinctive emo rap captures the emotions perfectly.

Rock The BellsLL Cool J

Released in 1985 on the prestigious DEF JAM label, this is a hip-hop classic from an artist who was just 15 at the time.

The sound was produced by RICK RUBIN.

Listening now, you get the thumping kick drum, the striking snare, and percussion that rings like metal.

Captivated by the looped breakbeats and their sense of groove, countless artists continue to sample this masterpiece to this day.

La-Di-Da-DiSlick Rick, Doug E. Fresh

An essential old-school classic! The phrase “La-Di-Da-Di, we like to party!” is well-known among the heads.

You’ll hear it when you play this track: the human beatboxing is absolutely off the charts.

It even outshines the breakbeats and scratches! Since it’s a live recording, it even captures the crowd going wild.

Lighters UpLil’ Kim

When it comes to women in the hip-hop scene, she’s someone you can’t forget.

She’s also shown her acting side, appearing alongside Omarion and the other members of B2K in the movie “You Got Served.” At the time, she appeared in a rather sexy outfit.

This is a track created by the two popular rappers Post Malone and Swae Lee, chosen as the theme song for the 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Despite its urban vibe, the song features a refreshing track with melodically delivered raps by the two artists, making it an enjoyable listen that even people who aren’t fond of rap might easily appreciate.
