Band songs to listen to on winter nights: Heartwarming Japanese classics (21–30)
Winter Love…tsukimi

Tsukimi, known for her “fired-up gal rock” and based in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, took a different approach with the 11th digital single released in December 2024.
Dialing back the rock edge, the track is crafted as a Christmas song that brings the J-pop influences of vocalist/guitarist Nini-chan—her musical roots—to the forefront.
Featuring pure, straightforward lyrics and a delicate vocal performance, the song hints at new avenues of expression for the group.
The music video was self-produced by the members themselves, showcasing the band’s DIY spirit.
It’s a perfect pick for moments when you want to quietly reflect on your feelings for someone special on a winter’s day, or when you’re looking for a heartwarming tune for the Christmas season.
SharonROSSO

This is a song by ROSSO, a rock band fronted by Yusuke Chiba, formerly of THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT.
It’s included on their first album, BIRD, released in 2002.
The razor-sharp guitar sound and husky vocals are really cool! The song structure is simple, but it’s one you’ll want to listen to over and over.

White Marchsumika

This song, which was chosen as the JR SKISKI campaign song from 2018 to 2019, is by the rock band sumika, known for producing many popular tracks.
When it comes to winter songs, the JR SKISKI theme songs are extremely popular! This track has sumika’s signature freshness, and its bright, crisp vibe fits perfectly with pure white snowy mountains.
While many winter songs tend to be mellow ballads, lively tunes like this one suit the season just as well!
Snow CountryToukyou Jihen

This experimental track transplants the emotion of traditional Japanese popular song—akin to the resonance of wagakki (traditional instruments)—into a hard-edged rock ensemble.
It’s a masterpiece by Tokyo Jihen, led by Ringo Sheena, included on their 2006 album “Adult.” As Sheena herself has called it “enka,” the phrasing that makes use of Japanese rhythmic cadence and lingering vowels, along with its lyrical word choices, overlays the snowy landscapes with the ache of a forlorn love.
On the album, it plays a narrative role through its continuity with the surrounding tracks, and on tour it took on importance as the opening number.
It’s a song you’ll want to hear when you want to feel the chill of the season while being wrapped in a voice that somehow carries warmth.
meringuemakaroni enpitsu

Many people have romantic memories associated with winter, right? That’s why I’d like to recommend the song “Meringue.” It’s by Macaroni Empitsu.
The song compares a love that feels like it might disappear—but somehow never does—to snow, and further, to meringue.
By the way, meringue is a pure-white confection made by whipping egg whites, and it’s surprisingly slow to melt.
The song also features lots of rhymes in its phrases, so some listeners interpret “meringue” as a wordplay echoing “gelände” (ski slope) as well.
Be sure to explore the lyrics’ meanings yourself.
February is cryingtsuki to adabana

This song is included on Tsuki to Adabana’s first EP, “Live Houses and You,” released in August 2020 by the Hyogo-born rock band.
It’s a guitar-driven rock track that blends urgency with melancholy, vividly conjuring scenes of dry late-winter air and a city waiting for dawn.
The lyrics go beyond simple romance to portray respect and jealousy toward an admired person, as well as the inner conflict over a relationship that might break if you get too close—something that really tightens the listener’s chest.
The music video was released in July 2020 and drew attention, especially within the live house scene.
Try listening as you overlay it with that feeling of holding back because you care too much, in the chilled air just before spring arrives.
Capturing both the fragility and intensity of February, this work is sure to resonate with your most complex emotions.
silentSEKAI NO OWARI

Silent, a Christmas song by SEKAI NO OWARI, was chosen as the theme for the drama Kono Koi Atatamemasu ka.
The jingling bells and chimes evoke the arrival of the Christmas season.
However, the Christmas depicted here isn’t a sparkling love song; it portrays the ache of spending the holiday alone, without the person you wished to be with by your side.
This is expressed as “silence,” reflecting the loneliness felt on a solitary night.
It’s a song that makes you want to follow the lyrics and listen again and again.
