The End of the WorldTHEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT

THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT is a band whose gritty, hard-hitting sound—rooted in rock ’n’ roll, blues, garage rock, and more—sent music fans into a frenzy.

After the band broke up, vocalist Yusuke Chiba continued energetically with projects like ROSSO and The Birthday, while bassist Koji Ueno has been active with the HIATUS, among others; each member has kept moving forward with vigor.

Their raw, macho, and rugged songs are the main draw, and I think many men admired Chiba’s husky singing voice.

You could say they were a band that embodied rock in every respect: performance, lyrics, vocals, and presence.

A three-piece punk band that established the melodic hardcore (melocore) genre in Japan and had a profound influence on many subsequent punk bands.

Despite being an indie band with no commercial tie-ins, they set a then-unprecedented legend by selling over one million albums in total, both domestically and internationally.

With high-speed songs and catchy English lyrics that stick in your ears, they are a band that can be called the very embodiment of melocore.

A four-piece rock band that’s walked a turbulent path: formed in 2005, made their major debut in 2009, ended their major contract in 2011, and then re-signed to a major label in 2020.

Through all the ups and downs, they’ve steadily grown their fanbase and are now right in the midst of a real breakthrough.

Their appeal can be summed up in two big points.

First, no matter which song you listen to, the sheer number of gorgeous melodies that move you to tears.

Second, the powerful words in their lyrics that truly reach each and every listener.

They’re a band you’ll want to listen to closely—lyrics booklet in hand—while letting yourself be swept away by the melodies.

A rock band from Kanagawa Prefecture that performed under the name [Champagne] until 2014.

With high-toned vocals and catchy melodies, many of their songs have been featured in tie-ins for TV dramas, films, and commercials.

Although their drummer, Akira Tasuku Shomura, who had been on medical leave since 2019, gracefully stepped down from the band in 2020, they remain a group whose momentum shows no signs of slowing.

Among Japanese rock bands, L’Arc~en~Ciel enjoys broad support from many fans thanks to their active media presence and numerous tie-ins.

In the ’90s, they were such a massively popular band that, together with GLAY, they split the favor of music fans of the time! Speaking of their appeal, it has to be vocalist hyde’s sexy voice and the exhilarating drive of the instrumentalists.

At the same time, they deliver beautiful rock ballads as well, making their catalog full of tracks you can’t afford to miss!

Maplesupittsu

Spitz, one of the quintessential bands representing Japan’s rock scene, is indispensable to this article! Formed in 1987, they have released countless masterpieces such as “Sora mo Toberu Hazu,” “Robinson,” and “Kaede.” Their appeal lies in their gently immersive vocals and instrumentation, and in the lyrical world crafted by Masamune Kusano.

While their lyrics may seem enigmatic at first glance, they leave room for each listener’s own interpretation—perhaps one reason fans continue to be captivated by their songs.

Hailing from Scarsdale, New York, Kousuke Saito is the guitarist-vocalist of UNISON SQUARE GARDEN.

Their signature songs include “Trace of Orion (Orion wo Nazoru)” and “Sugar Song and Bitter Step.” On the official UNISON site, his vocals are described as “overflowing with transparency yet possessing a distinctive edge.” In fact, Saito underwent vocal cord polyp surgery in 2014, and it’s said that it helped improve the stability of his high notes.

His singing is cool and sleek, with a truly beautiful extension into high registers that can be challenging even for many female singers.

As a singing guitarist, his performance level is outstanding—he plays highly complex guitar phrases while singing, delivering a wall of sound you wouldn’t expect from a three-piece band.

He also collaborated with Leo Ieiri in 2025, and their vocals were absolutely overwhelming.
