Bands and groups that color Japan’s R&B scene (21–30)
Railroad No.9Still Caravan

A production collective formed in 2007 centered around a live band.
Their appeal lies in a sound that brilliantly blends live instrumentation with programming.
Rooted in jazz and incorporating soul, funk, and R&B, they deliver a refined sonic experience.
Love’s On The WayORLAND

Since the ’90s, programmed production has become the global norm in the R&B scene, and bands with full live setups have decreased.
Amid that trend, this band makes inventive use of a vocoder and performs a city-pop sound.
While they’re often discussed within a pop context, this particular track of theirs leans closer to dance music inspired by hip hop-tinged Black contemporary styles.

Can’t Dance to Fevertsuru

A three-piece band that debuted in 2008.
All the members have Afro hairstyles, wear glasses, and sport a striking look with patterned shirts and boot-cut pants.
With the tagline “Evangelists of Excitement and Bittersweetness,” they have been expanding their reach, including handling jingles for Nippon TV’s information program PON!.
NudeVo Vo Tau

A band that debuted in 2003 and scored a big hit on the Oricon charts the following year with their release “Hada ~Nude~.” Although they disbanded in 2006, the powerful vocals of Ring captivate with lyrics full of message.
The simple sound is very beautiful and utterly entrancing.
ChanceD.A.N.

They are a band that incorporates various electronic music genres, techniques, and formats—such as ambient, dub techno, and R&B—and refines them into a mellow sound.
Characterized by timbres tailored for club music, they are known as Japanese Minimal Mellow.
Sayonara ColorSUPER BUTTER DOG

A five-piece band that made their major debut in 1997 with the album “FREEWAY” and sadly disbanded in 2008.
Their Japanese lyrics, set to a sound reminiscent of Western music, carry an almost English-like feel, and Takashi Nagazumi’s gentle vocals are just irresistibly cool.
Even after the breakup, each member launched solo projects and continues to thrive at the forefront.
Whyyahyel

They are among the first to incorporate cutting-edge R&B sounds—currently hitting overseas—into a full band setup.
Their knack for blending a variety of electronic-rock elements, including bass music, ambient, and electronica, into a seamless mix is something you won’t find elsewhere.
