Japan’s R&B scene is now attracting global attention with its diverse musicality.

From Official HIGE DANDism’s Black music-inspired sound and WONK’s mellow soundscapes to Suchmos’s distinctive style reminiscent of Jamiroquai,

and even Nulbarich’s Western-influenced falsetto vocals—the scene offers captivating sounds that transcend genre boundaries.

This time, we’ll introduce a selection of gems that showcase the new possibilities of Japanese R&B.

ChanceD.A.N.

They are a band that incorporates various electronic music genres, techniques, and formats—such as ambient, dub techno, and R&B—and refines them into a mellow sound.

Characterized by timbres tailored for club music, they are known as Japanese Minimal Mellow.

Sayonara ColorSUPER BUTTER DOG

A five-piece band that made their major debut in 1997 with the album “FREEWAY” and sadly disbanded in 2008.

Their Japanese lyrics, set to a sound reminiscent of Western music, carry an almost English-like feel, and Takashi Nagazumi’s gentle vocals are just irresistibly cool.

Even after the breakup, each member launched solo projects and continues to thrive at the forefront.

Mondo Grosso is a band led by Shinichi Osawa, who is also active as a club DJ.

They explore a wide range of genres, including R&B, acid jazz, and hip-hop.

This track has a distinctly contemporary feel—perhaps close to house music? It also evokes a similar vibe to the techno tracks produced by post-electro artists who became popular in France after 2000.

Mondo Grosso went on hiatus for a period, but resumed activities in 2017.

The high-quality pop rooted in a wide range of genres—funk, soul, rock—is wonderfully pleasant and intoxicating.

The moody ballads are also highly recommended.
