Coexistence of Ferocity and Beauty: A Roundup of Japanese Screamo/Post-Hardcore Bands

Screamo is said to be a music genre that emerged in the 1990s as a derivative of emo and hardcore.

The term itself is thought to blend “scream,” meaning to shout, with “emo,” which refers to emotional elements.

In other words, broadly speaking, screamo is music that adds shouted vocals—such as shouts and growls—to melodies often described as emotional or “emo.” However, today it has closely intertwined and overlapped with metalcore and post-hardcore, making the boundaries difficult to define.

In this article, we’ll introduce bands that are classified as screamo in a broad sense, including those often discussed within the context of these neighboring genres.

Savor the unique appeal of each band—whether it’s the raw power of intense shouts or the poignant beauty of clean vocals woven into that intensity.

A breakout work by the mysterious group Xmas Eileen, known for their white masks and trench-coat look and their thunderous sound.

They skillfully weave in the familiar appeal of mixture rock, crafting pop songs that are easy for anyone to enjoy.

If they can seize a single chance, they feel poised for a major hit—an artist to keep a close eye on.

Formed in 2009, the project initially staged visuals and music in parallel, and after some lineup changes it took on its current band form.

The group now consists of three members: vocalist Daisuke, guitarist Takashi, and bassist Reiya.

Rooted in metalcore, they craft a unique world by wielding the contrast between delicate, beautiful melodies and ground-crawling death vocals.

The band name SEVER BLACK PARANOIA means “to sever black paranoia,” embodying a strong resolve to never let things end as mere delusions.

Immune to anything but you…NEW BREED

A pop tune by NEW BREED that established a musical genre also known as “Picolimo,” named for the beeping, chiptune-like sound created through effects processing.

Its poppy, upbeat mood takes a sharp turn in the C section, tightening up the entire track like a strategic accent color in fashion.

Between delight and sorrowNATURE LIVING

NATURE LIVING – Between delight and sorrow
Between delight and sorrowNATURE LIVING

An ambitious track that layers death growls and whistle vocals onto a classic rock ’n’ roll foundation that kicks off with a melodious punk-style intro.

It feels like something that could exist somewhere, yet has never quite existed anywhere.

A standard screamo “starter” number I’d recommend to those who haven’t yet delved into pure death metal or hardcore.

2step syndromeANGRY FROG REBIRTH

A dance track by ANGRY FROG REBIRTH, based in Tokyo.

As the title suggests, its poppy rhythm makes it perfect for two-stepping and feels great.

For the band, it’s also an ambitious piece that incorporates clean vocals as an accent and weaves shifts within the song like a classic beginning–development–twist–conclusion arc.

Mind HavenMAKE MY DAY

Originally performing under the band name ASHLEY SCARED THE SKY, this four-piece rock band has earned high praise not only at rock festivals in Japan but also for their performance at Indonesia’s largest rock festival, Jack Cloth Summer Fest.

Their sound is hard yet solid, reminiscent of Western loud rock, and they’re known for the interplay between two vocal styles—clean and scream.

With their diverse range of songs, they are widely regarded as a leading contender to carry the next generation of the loud rock scene.
