Recommended Japanese techno bands. Popular and signature songs with technopop sound.

When we think of techno, the image that comes to mind is Detroit in the United States—rooted in Black music, a sound derived from the then-buzzing house music that energized the underground scene.

From there, its popularity spread to Europe and, before long, it became something you could frequently hear in Japan as well, interpreted under the term “technopop.”

Fast-forward to today, techno retains a strong following, with many musicians incorporating techno-inspired approaches into band formats.

In this feature, we’ll introduce works by Japanese techno and technopop bands and units, both old and new!

You’ll find tracks brimming with classic new wave vibes and synth-pop, with elements of rock crossing over too.

Some groups aren’t even organized in the conventional band format, which makes the scene feel all the more fresh.

This track was released as part of a digital album in January 2019.

LNoL was formed as a project to explore new musical expressions by Shinichi Osawa, who works widely as a musician, VERBAL from m-flo, and pianist Yaeko Takemura.

Sprinkloop is included on the album Equanimity, and it is filled with genre-defying appeal, fusing classical-style piano sounds with techno elements.

Techno Wolf 2019/8/15 LIVE @ WOMBtekunourufu

A techno band active in the underground techno scene that has also appeared on DOMMUNE, the streaming live platform curated by Naohiro Ukawa.

They’re known for their machine-driven live sets performed by a seven-member lineup.

Their biggest draw is the raw, hardware-based live sequencing and the grooves created with the djembe.

They operate irregularly, with no consistent release schedule, and their commitment to on-site, live-focused activity only enhances their underground credibility.

This band began with the unusual lineup of all childhood friends born in 1979.

Often classified as alternative rock or J-rock, they debuted in 1999 with the indie album “FLAME VEIN.” They made their major-label debut in 2000 and have since been active while providing numerous theme songs for anime and films.

Motoharu Fujiwara, the central figure of the band, writes and composes nearly all of their songs.

With profound lyrics and melodious sound, they continue to captivate many fans.

In 2007, they achieved a rare triple crown in the same year at the SPACE SHOWER Music Video Awards 2008, a testament to their highly regarded talent.

BUMP OF CHICKEN also produces tracks that incorporate techno-inspired approaches into their band sound, taking on a wide range of musical styles, making them a perfect fit for music fans who love melodic songs.

Rie Lambdoll and Mayuko began their activities in 2007.

They express a unique sonic world through synthesizer sounds and their two voices.

Their engineer Kabamix, who works on their tracks, is also drawing attention.

They’re a techno band whose future releases are highly anticipated.

A band that broadcasts Japanese techno from right here in Japan. To be honest, there aren’t many artists like that, but they still enjoy a steadfast following. Since it’s dance music, many of them are active in clubs or work as DJs as well. If you like this sound, I recommend digging into the techno genre through my other articles!
