In this article, we focus on bona fide bands and groups rooted in jazz, highlighting the classic tracks they’ve produced.
Alongside legendary fusion bands, there are now many groups that have further evolved jazz and earned global acclaim, especially in recent years.

The London trio The Comet Is Coming is an adventurous band that fuses jazz with electro and funk.
This track unites roaring sax, razor-sharp synths, and accelerating drums to depict a wordless ritual that awakens the inner fire, etching moments of destruction, rebirth, and awakening into sound.
Released as a single in March 2019 and included on the album Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery the same month.
Their 2016 album Channel the Spirits was nominated for the Mercury Prize.

The Noonward RaceMahavishnu Orchestra

The Mahavishnu Orchestra, known for pioneering the frontiers of jazz-rock.
Their debut album, The Inner Mounting Flame, released in November 1971, reached No.
11 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart.
This piece, one of the tracks on the album, brims with intense energy.
Centered on John McLaughlin’s guitar and Billy Cobham’s drums, the performance unfolds as an innovative sound that fuses jazz, rock, and Indian music.

Included on the 1991 album “Fourplay.” Formed in 1990.
It’s a true superband, bringing together fusion stars Bob James, Nathan East, Lee Ritenour, and Harvey Mason.
With such a star-studded lineup, the ensemble sound is absolutely top-notch.
XaviSnarky Puppy

Snarky Puppy is a funk group known for its rotating lineup of over 30 members and for winning numerous awards, including Grammys.
They are one of the most famous bands in fusion.
Their track “Xavi” features a passionate rhythm and introduces many melody-carrying instruments.
Even at just under ten minutes, it’s a stunning number that never loses your attention.
On the Sunny Side of the StreetThe Manhattan Transfer

It was used as a commercial song for Nestlé’s “Home Café Series” and Asahi Beer’s “Clear Asahi,” among others.
The song was released in 1930 for a Broadway musical, with lyrics by Dorothy Fields and music by Jimmy McHugh.
Later, it was performed by a stellar lineup of jazz musicians, including Frank Sinatra, Tommy Dorsey, and Count Basie, and became a jazz standard.
THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYSTraffic

Traffic is a fusion band also known for having British blues-rock musician Steve Winwood as a member.
“The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys” is the title track of an album released in 1971, and unusually for fusion, it’s a vocal number.
That said, its groovy performance and the players’ individual improvisations make it very much a quintessential fusion sound.
