【2026】A Collection of Masterpieces by Overseas Jazz Bands

What kind of image comes to mind when you hear the term “jazz band”? Perhaps a quartet led by a renowned player, or a big band steering a traditional orchestra—there are many possibilities.

In this article, we focus on bona fide bands and groups rooted in jazz, highlighting the classic tracks they’ve produced.

Alongside legendary fusion bands, there are now many groups that have further evolved jazz and earned global acclaim, especially in recent years.

We’ll be introducing plenty of timeless songs from these new-generation bands as well!

He and the Jazz All-Star Orchestra perform Duke Ellington’s “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing).” The solos are fantastic!

In the United States around the 1930s, due to policies of racial discrimination such as the Jim Crow laws in the South—and even in places like New York—it was unheard of for white and Black musicians to perform together in the same band.

Born the ninth son in a tailor’s family, Benny Goodman, who grew up in poverty, broke with America’s entrenched prejudices by inviting Black drummers and guitarists and performing alongside them in his own band.

He conducted the trombone section of the famed Stan Kenton Big Band in the 1960s, and from 1973 served as the overall producer of Creative World Records, which managed and released the Kenton label, issuing a total of 25 albums.

He continued to create works infused with a variety of flavors, producing pieces that presented big band music to the public with greater clarity.
