Having overcome disabilities such as congenital osteogenesis imperfecta, Michel Petrucciani earned acclaim as the finest jazz pianist in France.

He became the first French artist to sign with the prestigious Blue Note label and was awarded the Légion d’honneur, building a brilliant career over the course of his 36 years.

During his 1997 visit to Japan, he recorded the album “Trio In Tokyo” at Blue Note Tokyo in Minami-Aoyama—a landmark live recording in jazz history that captures the searing intensity of his performance as if vacuum-sealed.

A classic album I recommend even for jazz beginners is Eddie Higgins’s “You Are Too Beautiful.” Although he often played as a sideman, his performances are refined, accessible, and very easy to listen to.

Released in 2006, “You Are Too Beautiful” centers on standard numbers, making it an album that’s approachable even for those who’ve never listened to jazz.

If you’re trying jazz piano for the first time, start with Eddie Higgins’s “You Are Too Beautiful.”

Chihiro Yamanaka, a pianist from Gunma Prefecture known for her beauty, is recognized for making her U.S.

debut as the first Japanese jazz artist on the prestigious Decca label.

Since 2015, she has also served as an assistant professor of piano at Berklee College of Music.

Here, we introduce her landmark debut album, “Living Without Friday,” released in 2001.

Issued by Sawano Kobo—a label well known among fans of Japanese piano trios—the album became a classic, acclaimed for the fresh appeal unique to a newcomer and her outstanding technique.

Her inspired choice to cover a song by the renowned Miyuki Nakajima is superb as well, making this a gem that showcases her keen sense for melody.
