[Childcare] Perfect for June! Indoor play ideas to incorporate into childcare
June brings the rainy season, when outdoor play tends to decrease in childcare settings.
With so many days of unfavorable weather, teachers often struggle because the children can’t play to their hearts’ content.
So, we’ve gathered ideas for indoor activities here! We’ll introduce a variety of games, from ones that get kids moving to quieter activities they can enjoy calmly.
The more play options you have, the more smiles you’ll see from the children! Please use this as a reference so both children and adults can enjoy fun times together.
Children’s creations are treated as “works,” so we refer to them as “seisaku (制作)” in the text.

Rock-paper-scissors is fun even in the rain

Here are some rock-paper-scissors games you can enjoy indoors with kids, even on rainy days.
“American Janken” reverses winning and losing, so it makes you think.
“Body Janken” is a game where you represent rock, paper, and scissors using your whole body.
It’s recommended to decide how you’ll show rock, paper, and scissors beforehand.
In “Newspaper Janken,” which uses newspaper, you stand on a sheet and play; each time you lose, you fold your newspaper once to make it smaller.
In “Janken Train,” the loser lines up behind the winner, and the ‘passengers’ gradually increase.
Find your favorite janken game and give it a try!

Let me introduce Rolling Dodgeball, a game where you roll the ball instead of throwing it.
The rules are similar to regular dodgeball, but players are split into inside and outside groups, and the ball is rolled to keep the game going.
If an inside player is hit by a ball rolled by someone on the outside, they move to the outside and join their team’s attack from there.
It can also be fun to decide the winner by counting how many players remain inside at the end.
Unlike regular dodgeball, this version uses a soft ball, so you can play safely.

Thinking while moving is fun! Let me introduce a stop-ball throwing activity.
You’ll need colored balls and cards with signs on them.
Place the colored balls on the floor and throw them into a basket.
When a “Stop” card is shown, everyone must freeze—even if they’re in the middle of throwing a ball.
Once kids get used to the rules, it’s fun to add similar-sounding words like “tomato” along with “stop.” Try adapting it while observing the children’s responses.

Play expands with your ideas! Let me share some fun ways to play with tissue paper flowers.
All you need to prepare is tissue paper in your favorite colors.
Tissue paper is light, soft, and comes in attractive, vibrant colors.
Some preschools and families may use it for crafts, but this time let’s try using it for activities.
You can throw it, tear it, crumple it, and play dynamically, or put it in a container, add water, and make a sensory bottle for a calm, soothing time.
It could also be fun to decide on the activities together with the children.

Move nimbly and avoid danger! Here’s an idea for a game called Centipede Tag.
You probably know there are many types of tag, like Freeze Tag and Color Tag.
Have you heard of Centipede Tag, where you work together with teammates to escape the tagger? Assign one person as the tagger, and everyone else is on the centipede team.
The centipede players place their hands on the shoulders of the person in front and stay connected without letting go.
When the last person in the centipede gets tagged, the tagger switches.
It’s tough to escape from a freely moving tagger, but by cooperating, the centipede team will build strong bonds.
raincoat
A raincoat is indispensable during the rainy season.
Here’s an idea to use raincoats—something familiar and friendly to children—as a wall decoration.
Instead of simply cutting out raincoat shapes and displaying them, why not try adding a creative twist? Prepare raincoats in a variety of bright colors, then create patterns by rolling marbles dipped in paint over colored construction paper, or by flicking paint from a brush in a dripping style.
After adding the patterns, cut the paper into raincoat shapes to make unique, personalized raincoats.

Let’s work together with friends to help the aliens! Here’s an idea for an Alien Return game.
You’ll need balloons, markers, and something to mark the start and finish lines.
In this simple game, you carry balloon “aliens” to the goal—but cooperating with friends is absolutely required.
That’s because you play in teams of four, holding hands, and the rule is that you can’t let go! Coordinate your moves using your linked hands, heads, shoulders, or hips, and call out to sync your timing.
Work together and save the aliens!
