[For Middle Schoolers] A Comprehensive Introduction to Fun Sports Day Events We Recommend!

You want the once-a-year sports festival to be a wonderful event where you can have fun while working together with your classmates and teammates, right?

In this article, we introduce interesting events recommended for junior high school sports festivals.

We’ve gathered some slightly unusual events that will let not only students who are good at sports but also those who aren’t laugh and have a great time.

In addition to events that add a twist to the classics, there are also thrilling events where the outcome doesn’t depend on athletic ability.

Be sure to include them in your program and make your sports festival fun and exciting!

oblique projectile motion

“Oblique Launch,” a crowd-pleaser at sports day.

Form teams of four.

Each team holds a blue tarp with a large ball placed inside, and carries it to the area where a rope is strung high above.

Coordinate your movements and launch the ball so it clears the rope.

You must not touch the ball directly with your hands! The key is to yank the tarp and use the rebound to send the ball upward.

After the ball clears the rope, catch it again with the tarp and pass it on to the next group.

Sync your breathing, work together, and overcome the challenge as a team!

slow cycling contest

Wheeler School Curriculum: Slow Bicycle Race
slow cycling contest

Do you know the slow cycling race? It’s a competition done on bicycles, but the rule is that the person who reaches the finish line later wins.

If you get off the bike or put a foot on the ground, you’re disqualified.

Since a bicycle will topple if it stops, you have to inch forward little by little—but that’s easier said than done.

Because speed and body size don’t matter, it’s a fun event where you never know who will win.

There’s also a risk of falling, so don’t forget to wear a helmet!

Courier relay

Courier relay

How about a delivery relay that puts teamwork to the test? In this event, you attach poles to a board to make a portable shrine, place cardboard boxes on top, and carry it with several people.

It’s a relay format, passing the shrine on to the next group.

However, there’s a rule that the number of boxes increases with each handoff.

Once you stack about three, even a slight shake can make them fall, so you have to run in perfect sync.

It encourages communication among participants, so some classmates might use this as a chance to become friends.

Costume Relay

Wouldn’t it be great to have an event where everyone can laugh and get excited together? That’s why I’d like to introduce the Costume Relay.

The rules are the same as a regular relay, with one key difference: the runners have to wear costumes.

Dress up as your favorite thing—like a trendy anime character or an animal—and run.

It could also be fun to choose a concept as a team for a unified look.

That way, the audience can enjoy wondering, “What’s the next costume going to be?”

Tricycle Relay

Tricycle Relay

How about a tricycle relay that looks fun, too? As the name suggests, it’s a race where you ride tricycles and pass the baton.

Tricycles are easy to ride, but your legs feel cramped and it’s surprisingly hard to pedal.

The taller you are, the tougher it tends to be.

It’s also a great event for getting everyone excited thanks to the funny contrast of middle schoolers riding tricycles.

Get in touch with your inner child and give it a try! By the way, one perk of the tricycle relay is that you can enjoy it indoors or in tight spaces.

Power Force

Sports Event: Power Force Edition
Power Force

As its name suggests, Power Force is a powerful game where players compete in strength.

First, four participants are connected with elastic cords.

Then they run toward paper balloons placed in different directions, and whoever pops one first wins.

Only up to four people can play at a time, but by rotating players, large groups can enjoy it.

It also sounds fun to strategize—like deciding when to go all-out.

Giant Baton Relay

Giant Baton Relay

Wouldn’t it be fun to supersize the baton used in a relay? The uniquely imaginative “Giant Baton Relay” is simply about making the baton used in a typical class relay extra large.

It’s perfect when you want visual impact or a good laugh.

One person can carry a single giant baton, or you can make it even bigger so two or three people have to carry it.

There’s plenty of room for customization, so give it a try at your sports festival!
