In this article, we’re showcasing a wide-ranging selection of bands that include female vocals!

Use this as a guide when exploring bands with a different charm from K-pop—or as a playlist to dive right in!

RedAida

RedAida

Aida burst onto the Korean music scene in September 1999 at the astonishingly young age of just 14.

Their style of performing while playing their own instruments, alongside Hans Band, helped pave the way for later girl bands.

Their debut album, “Angels in Distress & Anger,” features catchy melodies and an appealing pop-rock sound.

In particular, the track “클났어” is essential listening to appreciate their capabilities.

Aida also included members who had worked as child actor-models.

Their second album, “Reload,” released in April 2000, showed musical growth, but the group unfortunately disbanded shortly afterward.

Recommended for those who like cute, approachable sounds.

Misty Blue, a gem of the Korean indie rock scene that weaves delicate tones and a lyrical worldview.

Formed in 2002 with Jeong Eunsu on vocals, they debuted in 2005 with the album ‘Your Star’s Name is Sirius B,’ quietly gaining popularity among indie fans.

Their charm lies in a diverse, dream pop-tinged sound and Eunsu’s translucent vocals.

In 2007, their music was featured on the soundtrack of the hit drama ‘Coffee Prince.’ Until their regrettable disbandment in June 2010, they left behind landmark works in Korean indie music, including the Sentimental series themed around the four seasons.

A perfect band for those who want to savor delicate emotions!

Cherry Filter are a legendary presence in the Korean music scene.

Formed in 1997, this four-piece rock band builds powerful yet accessible music around Cho Youjeen’s commanding vocals.

After debuting with the album “HEAD-UP” in 2000, they scored a major hit with “sweet little kitty” from 2002’s “Made in Korea.” The band’s name is said to express harmony between the feminine and the masculine.

Highly acclaimed, they won the Rock Award at the 2002 SBS Gayo Daejeon and the Popularity Award at the 2003 Golden Disc Awards, and in 2022 Cho Youjeen’s collaboration with BTS’s RM also made waves.

Their appeal lies in a solid, no-frills rock sound—distinct from the gloss of K-pop.

If you love bands, they’re a must-check!

True to their name, which means “chaos,” the band embodies diversity and is active at music festivals, particularly in Korea.

Manju Pocket is a Korean band whose music is notably influenced by Black music.

They’ve also collaborated with Shirosky, a jazz hip-hop producer popular in Korea.

While their sound has evolved since their debut, they primarily excel at R&B-based music.

Many of their tracks are laid-back, making them a perfect fit for anyone looking for chill tunes.

It was a Korean three-member co-ed rock band that came to an end after about nine years starting in 1993.

The band had a number of issues, including engaging in plagiarism, and frequently clashed with their agency.

Although their music itself was highly regarded, the accumulation of various problems unfortunately led to their disbandment.

Let me go!The Volunteers

If you’re into tough rock with thick, roaring guitars like shoegaze, I recommend the rock band The Volunteers.

Their tight setup of simple guitar, bass, and drums meshes perfectly with indie-leaning vocals.

Tracks like “Let me go” feature clean guitar arpeggios interwoven with distorted guitar, which should really hit the spot for anyone who enjoys the vibe of the Irish rock band The Cranberries.
