[KagePro] A Compilation of Popular Songs from the Kagerou Project Series
Last updated:

The Kagerou Project series—also known as “Kagepro”—is a mixed-media project created by Jin, also known as Shizen no Teki-P.

Starting with the 2011 song Artificial Enemy, the Kagepro series expanded into music, novels, manga, anime, film, and games, earning overwhelming support from younger generations.

With a story that sparks the curiosity of “What’s going to happen next?” and a cast of uniquely charming characters, some people even devoted their entire youth to it.

In this article, we’ve compiled the musical works from the Kagepro series!

Whether you’re planning to give them a listen for the first time or want to revisit them and soak in the nostalgia, this playlist is recommended for both.

[Kagerou Project] A roundup of popular songs from the Kagerou Project series (1–10)

REDGOUACHE

A track that signaled the restart of the Kagerou Project.

Created as the theme song for the film Kagerou Daze -in a day’s-, released in November 2016, this piece features a driving band sound and soaring vocals that ignite listeners’ hearts.

The lyrics, which express the distance and changes that come with a friend growing up through the distinctive metaphor of “their eye color changing,” convey a piercing sense of melancholy alongside the image of a sunset.

It’s a rock tune that rekindles the emotions of those who were once absorbed in the series, hinting at a new expansion of the story.

Boy Bravejin

Boy Brave Jin

A track included on the album ‘Mekakucity Records.’ It’s a song that depicts the past of Seto, a member of the Mekakushi-dan, telling the story of a boy who feared his ability to read others’ minds until he found the courage to face it.

Beneath its exhilarating, fast-paced guitar rock, the poignantly confessional lyrics about loneliness and inner conflict are truly moving.

A version sung by Kimiko is included on the anime-related release ‘MEKAKUCITY M’s 2: Mekakucity Actors Vocal & Sound Collection.’

At summer’s end I’ve forgottenjin

A nostalgic rock ballad that symbolizes the reboot of the Kagerou Project.

Featured toward the end of the third album, Mekakucity Reload, released in November 2018, this song is a poignant piece themed around fireworks at summer’s end and a parting of ways.

The wistful piano phrases and synth tones that seem to spread across the night sky create a fleeting beauty that draws you in.

The lyrics, in which the protagonist desperately wishes to keep holding hands until the very last moment, are heart-wrenching.

It’s a masterpiece that leaves you feeling the lingering afterglow of the series—impossible to listen to without tears.

Artificial Enemyjin

The exhilarating, fast-paced guitar rock sound is thrilling and cool! Released in February 2011, this was Jin’s first work as a Vocaloid producer and the memorable first installment of the Kagerou Project.

It’s included on the album Mekakucity Days, and its arrangement—where intense band sound blends with digital noise—gives you the sensation of being pulled straight into the story’s world just by listening.

The lyrics, seemingly spoken from the perspective of an entity inside a computer screen to a “you” who’s turning your back on reality, are also striking.

Why not start by listening to this origin point?

Transparent Answerjin

Its fresh yet faintly heartrending band sound tightens your chest.

Depicting Shintaro and Ayano’s episode, “The Story of Avoidance,” this work is one of Jin’s signature numbers, included on the album Mekakucity Days released in August 2012.

A high-achieving boy and a girl who never stopped smiling—their missed connections and irreversible regrets are woven into a story that will move many listeners to tears.

It holds an important place within the series, with an alternate version also featured on the related anime album MEKAKUCITY M’s 2 for Mekakucity Actors.

When you want to reminisce about days gone by and sink into a sentimental mood, be sure to give it a listen.

Lost Day Hourjin

A song that revisits the end of summer from an adult’s perspective within the story of the Kagerou Project.

Through lyrics that recall former friends amid everyday scenes and streets bathed in the glow of sunset, it reflects the contrast between the radiance of youth and life in the present.

The pastoral band sound really sinks in, too.

Included on the album Mekakucity Reload released in November 2018, it serves as an epilogue-like piece within a collection that arrived about five years and six months after the previous album, Mekakucity Records, carrying the lingering aftertaste and postscript of the story.

Children Recordjin

This is the ninth Vocaloid song by Jin, also known for being covered by Wagakki Band.

Serving as the opening theme of the Kagerou Project, the arrangement weaves in lyrics and melodies from previously released Kagerou Project songs, creating a stirring experience even for those who aren’t diehard fans.

The opening, which progresses from a wistful guitar-and-bass ensemble into a driving beat, foreshadows the start of a grand story.

With its thrilling melody that amps up the tension, it’s a hugely popular track that has achieved double million views.
