Misty RiverOka Midori

This is the first entry in the so-called “mysterious enka” direction and a pivotal song in Midori Oka’s career: Kiri no Kawa (River of Mist).

It became the hit that sparked Oka’s breakthrough after nearly a decade in the industry at the time of its release, and it remains one of her signature songs—hugely popular in karaoke.

Singing it with the same mastery as Oka, who powerfully conveys a woman’s hidden passions, is extremely challenging.

But if you listen closely, you’ll notice the wistful, beautiful melody is easy to remember, and—if you don’t worry about fine technique—surprisingly singable.

Of course, covering the wide vocal range from low to high notes is tough, but keep practicing little by little and you’ll get used to it.

Keep at it!

2 on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart.

On The Best Ten, it soared to No.

1 on January 19 and went on to hold the top spot for five consecutive weeks, becoming a major hit.

With a clear, transparent voice, it conveys the delicate emotions of a woman departing from Narita Airport for a foreign land.

Though there is anxiety in her decision to leave everything behind and fly off to follow her lover, her determination to move forward while holding onto hope for the future is striking.

The distinctive vocal style later known as the “Akina Vibrato” is also part of its appeal.

It’s the perfect song to sing at karaoke with friends while reminiscing about old times.

Final examSatō chinami ni

This work rhythmically portrays negative emotions.

The song “Kimatsu Test” by Vocaloid producer Chinami Sato was released in February 2025.

It’s a highly relatable track that delves into the feeling of “I’m a worthless person,” making it easy to see yourself in the protagonist.

Thinking about what kind of test they took and how they ended up with the highest score… it starts to feel a little unsettling.

As you listen, pay attention to the distinctive bassline in the sound arrangement.

Brotherly Code of HonorKitajima Saburō

Kitajima Saburō’s masterpiece “Kyōdai Jingi,” which gained popularity for its melancholic lyrics and melody.

While the song features relatively intricate kobushi (melodic turns) for his repertoire, that doesn’t mean it’s particularly difficult.

There are kobushi that span more than three scale degrees, but because they mostly appear in descending passages, the overall difficulty of the ornamentation is low.

If you find it hard to produce the crisp, well-defined kobushi heard in the original, you can apply strong vibrato to sing in a kobushi-like manner as an alternative.
