I’m Hiyoko-sensei, a former nursery school teacher from Hyogo Prefecture. At the beginning of September, some of the heat still lingers, but there are so many enjoyable things—like delicious seasonal foods such as grapes, Pacific saury, and sweet potatoes, as well as events like moon-viewing and Respect for the Aged Day.

Silver Week

Following the Golden Week in May, a Silver Week was established in September. Unfortunately, Silver Week is not a large consecutive holiday that occurs every year, but since 2009—when the combination of two national holidays, Respect for the Aged Day and the Autumnal Equinox Day, with Saturday and Sunday resulted in up to five consecutive days off—the extended autumn holiday has come to be called Silver Week.
