[Childcare] Fun craft ideas and craft activities perfect for summer
Summer is full of fun events at daycares and kindergartens! With water play, festivals, and fireworks events, children really get a feel for the season.
Here, we’ll introduce craft ideas recommended for summer.
You can make all sorts of things like colorful fireworks, delicious-looking shaved ice, beautiful morning glories, and cute beach sandals.
These activities let you enjoy the summer atmosphere through crafting, so please use them as a reference! Some projects use unique techniques, so be sure to make fun summer memories together with the children.
Since the works created by children are regarded as artworks, the term “seisaku” (制作) is used in the text.

fireworks
Why not incorporate a summery fireworks motif into your wall decor? For a dynamic fireworks look, we recommend a semi-3D wall display.
Use construction paper to make several circles of different sizes and colors, then layer and glue them together.
On top of the circles, evenly scatter ribbon curls as accents.
The key is to adhere everything firmly with glue.
You can also sprinkle round stickers or star motifs to add a festive touch.
A sparkling fireworks wall will delight the children!
footprint-shaped watermelon
Why not make a cute watermelon using footprints? Stamp both feet in bright red on construction paper to represent the watermelon’s flesh.
Add the rind and seeds with green and black, and you’re done! The footprints also make a wonderful keepsake to record growth.
Summer is a time when children grow especially fast, so create a lovely piece that lets families celebrate that growth together.
Display the finished pieces side by side and enjoy a quiz-style game with the children: “Whose feet are these?” It’s sure to become a memorable page of your summer.
Dyed shoji paper fireworks painting
If you add color to shoji paper using the dye-painting technique, you can create calm, very elegant fireworks! Dye-painting is done by folding shoji paper several times and applying watercolor paint dissolved in water.
When you unfold it, softly blurred colors appear, and it looks so beautiful! I recommend applying several colors together on a single sheet.
After the paint dries—or before applying the paint—if you make various cuts with scissors as you would for kirie (paper cutting), you can also create fireworks patterns.
You can do this with washi calligraphy paper (hanshi) as well, so please give it a try.
[Ages 3 and up] Rainbow Craft

Here’s a craft idea inspired by rainbows, featuring the beautiful light reflected through colored cellophane.
Stick small pieces of colored cellophane onto a rainbow-shaped template to enjoy a stained-glass effect.
Handling the colorful cellophane also helps children develop their sense of color.
For a more satisfying result, it’s recommended that adults prepare the rainbow template in advance.
That way, children can simply enjoy exploring colors.
Take the finished piece outside and let it catch the sunlight to appreciate its beauty even more.
Give it a try!

[Tissue Paper] Pom-Pom Ice Cream
![[Tissue Paper] Pom-Pom Ice Cream](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/CtnQxm8N2R0/sddefault.jpg)
Let’s make fluffy ice cream using tissue paper flowers! Teachers, please prepare in advance by making the ice cream cones out of construction paper and folding the tissue paper into an accordion, stopping before you spread it out.
The children will take the pre-folded tissue paper, open it up to create the flower shape, and place the opened “flower” on top of the cone to complete the fluffy ice cream! It’s also fun to make several flowers in different colors and stack them to create two-, three-, or even more-scoop ice cream cones.
Straw Stamping: Fireworks

Speaking of summer, fireworks are essential, aren’t they? Many children surely look forward to handheld sparklers and fireworks festivals.
In this craft activity, we’ll depict fireworks using straw stamping: cut a straw into four slits at the tip, dip it in paint, and stamp it onto black construction paper.
Any paint color is fine, but darker colors will blend into the black background, so brighter shades like yellow, orange, pink, and light blue work best.
Since we’re using black paper, white will also stand out nicely.
Try layering different colors to create vibrant, festive fireworks.
[Paper Cups] Colorful Lanterns
![[Paper Cups] Colorful Lanterns](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/655yxlLSYkE/sddefault.jpg)
How about making colorful lanterns out of paper cups? First, have the children draw patterns on the paper cups.
Prepare bands for the outside that are 2–3 cm wide and about 20 cm long.
It looks nice if you glue a thin strip of construction paper in a different color down the center of each band.
It’s a good idea for the teacher to prepare these in advance.
Once the paper cups are decorated, attach the top and bottom of each band to the cup.
Take care to stick them on neatly so the center forms a clean circle.
Since the bands need to be spaced evenly, adding guide marks makes it easier for the children to work.
Glue a black construction paper band around the bottom, attach some twine, and it’s done.
