Hit and popular songs by Kinoko Teikoku

Let me introduce some songs by the four-piece rock band, Kinoko Teikoku.

They began full-fledged activities in 2008, originally crafting a sound influenced by shoegaze.

It might be a bit hard to imagine, given their current laid-back vibe and emo feel.

However, even now, you can sense traces of that influence in parts of their songs—or, depending on the track, throughout—and I think music fans will find some interesting discoveries in their work.

As for the origin of their band name, it’s said to come from guitarist A-chan’s mushroom-like personality and the fact that the members were fans of Yura Yura Teikoku—hence “Kinoko Teikoku.”

Now, please enjoy Kinoko Teikoku’s songs, full of allure and emo sensibility, with a charm that at times evokes shoegaze.

Memories are things that fade.

This song feels like an image that represents that.

Kinoko Teikoku’s lyrics are often very rhythmic, but this track in particular seems to prioritize rhythm over meaning.

That, in turn, creates a unique sense of weightless drift.

It’ll get stained.kinoko teikoku

This is a cover included on the now-legendary Chatmonchy tribute album.

The original song was released in 2008, but this version lowers the key and engulfs the track in a murkier, more brooding atmosphere.

It truly lives up to the name of a cover.

This is a cover song by bloodthirsty butchers, the band Hisako Tabuchi was a member of.

It’s included on the Butchers’ 2014 tribute album.

The crisp, cutting snare and weighty bass provide a solid foundation, while the wavering guitar tone creates a distinctive groove.

At daybreakkinoko teikoku

A track from the indie first album “Uzu ni Naru” (Spiraling).

The largely static arpeggios and the guitar that repeats the same phrases match well with the lyrics, which evoke the lonely, hazy feeling of waking up in the middle of the night.

But in the final chorus, the drum patterns rapidly build momentum, enveloping you in a sense of urgency.

It might actually be a surprisingly fitting song to hear right when you wake up.

That languid vibe that’s somewhere between rap and poetry reading is really nice.

I think it’s a track best listened to late at night.

The guitar riff has that distinctly Japanese, good-melody feel and never gets old—that’s a plus.

If you think too hard about the lyrics’ meaning, you’ll just get confused, so keep it moderate.

Crybabykinoko teikoku

This is the closing track of the second major-label album, “Ai no Yukue,” released on November 2, 2016.

Its passionate performance and lyrics—filled with heartfelt wishes and prayers—leave a strong impression.

With such a wonderful love song, listeners’ hearts are sure to be continually moved.

The SEAkinoko teikoku

This is a track included on the mini-album “Uzu ni Naru” (Becoming a Vortex).

The opening vocals, the guitar arpeggios that come in, and the rhythm section—all are composed with a minimal number of sounds.

Before you know it, you’ll find yourself drawn into its musical world.
