Since discovering music during my school days, I’ve mainly listened to Japanese and Korean pop. I have experience writing articles for sites like Utaten. 2000s J-pop and 2010s K-pop were especially the soundtrack of my youth. With the mindset that “good is good,” I enjoy music across genres. Thanks to past work environments and their influence, I was exposed to lots of classic rock and kayōkyoku (Japanese popular songs), which may have broadened the scope of what I love. Billlie is a girl group that made their Japan debut in 2023.

Active across platforms like YouTube and Instagram, they sing “BYOB (bring your own best friend),” a song that carries a straightforward message to friends.

BYOB is widely known overseas as an initialism used on party invitations.

By replacing the last “B” with “best friend,” the song conveys the message, “Bring your best friend to the party.” It’s K-pop with an urban vibe, featuring airy, expanding synth tones.

CupidFIFTY FIFTY

“Cupid” is at the top of the K-pop songs I especially want to recommend from 2023.

It’s gained global popularity, even entering the U.S.

Billboard Hot 100.

In Korea, it’s become a long-running hit in a sort of reimported way thanks to its worldwide success.

The English “Twin Ver.” has been the bigger chart hit.

With its familiar, beautiful melody line and retro vibe, it’s the kind of song that will instantly draw in certain listeners.

There’s a touch of ennui to it, yet it leaves you wrapped in a happy feeling that’s very pleasant.

The members’ harmonies are also wonderful—such a lovely track.

Horizon is a track with a stylish, emotional vibe.
