Secret of my heartKuraki Mai

Singer-songwriter Mai Kuraki drew instant attention when her debut single, despite having no tie-in, became a million seller.

Released on April 26, 2000, her third single “Secret of my heart,” which was used as the ending theme for the TV anime Detective Conan, set a record by becoming her third consecutive million-selling release since her debut.

Her clear, translucent voice and wistful melodies showcase an expressive power hard to believe from a teenager.

It’s a pop tune that felt like the dawn of a new era at the time, and one where you should also pay attention to the different arrangements between the TV-size and full-size versions.

Planet of the BearsKatō Shin’ichi (Fujifaburikku)

Shinichi Kato, the bassist of Fujifabric, is from Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture.

He started playing bass in junior high school and, after graduating from high school, joined Tsuyoshi Tsuru’s band, Floater.

In 2002, when Fujifabric’s then-bassist left the band, Kato joined as a supporting member.

The following year, he became an official member, and in February 2004 they released their pre-debut album Alamode, followed by their major-label debut with the single Sakura no Kisetsu in April.

He also writes lyrics and composes music, not only for Fujifabric but has also provided songs for groups and artists such as Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku and Megumi Nakajima.

Crimson Boat SongKitami Kyoko

“Crimson Boat Song” is one of Kyoko Kitami’s most famous enka numbers—an emotional piece that portrays a parting between lovers.

Set to the rhythm of a boat song, it vividly depicts the heartrending farewell of a man and woman aboard a vessel drifting down the Mogami River, brought to life by Kitami’s poignantly wistful vocals.

Especially striking is how delicately it expresses a woman’s complex feelings—she doesn’t want to part, yet can no longer stay together.

Anyone who has experienced a farewell with someone dear will likely empathize with the protagonist’s emotions.

By singing it with genuine feeling, even the painful memories of parting may transform into something beautiful.

The Spider’s ThreadTomei

Singer-songwriter Tomaki, who gained nationwide popularity after performing the theme song for the film “Suzume,” might surprise those who strongly associate her with that track.

In fact, her body of work can be quite edgy, and she occasionally releases songs that prioritize artistic sensibility over commercial appeal.

This piece is one such song.

While it’s composed with an image of early Showa-era jazz, the vocal line is fairly demanding, featuring very high falsetto.

In addition, there are dramatic pitch jumps, so delivering it properly requires considerable pitch control.

QGen’in wa jibun ni aru.

“Q” by Genin wa Jibun ni Aru, a seven-member dance group formed in 2018, is a cheer song that encourages new adults to keep moving forward despite their inner struggles.

The song is especially notable for its lyrics: sung with vocals processed digitally like a Vocaloid, it delivers a powerful message that pushes back against those around you who assume your goals are unattainable.

If you have a dream job you’re determined to pursue, or you’re feeling uncertain about whether you can make your ambitions a reality, I hope you’ll listen to this song and draw courage from it.
