This would be their first Christmas song as a single, I suppose.

FUNKY DOGSKubota Toshinobu

If you want someone to deliver a truly soulful number, he’s the one—many of you probably feel the same.

This is a track by Toshinobu Kubota, a singer who’s also very active overseas.

It was released in 2003.

It grabbed attention when it was chosen as the opening theme for the sketch comedy show Warau Inu no Jounetsu, which featured the duo Ucchan Nanchan, among others.

Riding an R&B groove, it sings of an unstoppable love.

The beat is so catchy that before you know it, you’ll find your body swaying along—and you’ll want to clap your hands too.

It’s BADKubota Toshinobu

Toshihiko Tahara’s 24th single, released in November 1985.

In this video, it’s the version covered by Kubota.

It’s regarded as the first hit song in Japan to include rap.

The funky track and powerful rap heighten the sense of excitement.

TAWAWA Hit ParadeKubota Toshinobu

The B-side to the fourth single, “CRY ON YOUR SMILE,” released in October 1987.

In contrast to the A-side, it’s an upbeat, catchy pop track with a memorable chorus that sticks in your head.

On the two-disc fourth best-of album “THE BADDEST ~Hit Parade~,” released in 2011, this song appears at both the beginning and the end, truly framing the collection as a hit parade.

“Corcovado” refers to a tall mountain in Rio de Janeiro, and the Christ statue towering there is also famous as a tourist attraction.

In English, the title is rendered as “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars.” It’s a representative piece of relaxed, slow bossa nova.

When sung in English, it takes on a jazz ballad feel, offering a different atmosphere.

LIFEKubota Toshinobu

A track from the album “Beautiful People,” released in November 2019.

Since it’s a song performed by Mr.

Kubota—one of the leading figures in Japanese R&B—it’s quite a formidable opponent for karaoke! First, there’s that bouncy 16th-note groove… and on top of that, the slow-ballad tempo is one of the things Japanese singers tend to struggle with most.

The soft high tones that make skillful use of mixed voice are also a major hurdle when singing.

If you’re going to try it at karaoke, start by making sure the groove doesn’t flatten out, and avoid forcing the high notes with sheer power.

If you’re not comfortable with mixed voice, boldly switching to falsetto is a perfectly valid option!

Midnight SunKubota Toshinobu

It’s a summer song included on the sixth album, Neptune, released on July 1, 1992.

The programmed beats, horn section, and choppy rhythm guitar are super cool.

It’s a stylish, funky track with an irresistible groove.
