Shizuka Kudo’s famous and popular songs

Let me introduce songs by Shizuka Kudo, a singer and actress who was once active as a member of Onyanko Club.

Shizuka Kudo is also well known as the wife of Takuya Kimura of the national idol group SMAP.

You’ve probably had many chances to hear her songs in various contexts, such as commercials and TV show theme songs.

Her solo debut single, “Forbidden Telepathy,” shot straight to No.

1 on the Oricon chart, and she is said to be one of the “Four Queens” of female idols who were most active in the 1980s.

Released on February 3, 1993.

It was the theme song for Fuji TV’s Monday 9 p.m.

drama “I Want to Return to That Day,” in which the artist also appeared.

In addition to the drama tie-in, lyrics were written by Miyuki Nakajima, and it became the best-selling single by the artist.

It peaked at No.

1 and sold 939,000 copies.

AgainKudō Shizuka

Shizuka Kudo’s second single, released on December 2, 1987.

Unlike the Onyanko Club image that emphasized an idol-like vibe, it portrays a sharper, edgier woman seeking love.

It seems this approach paid off: it peaked at No.

3 on the Oricon charts, and sales surpassed the previous single, reaching 159,000 copies.

The True Face of the StormKudō Shizuka

Released on May 3, 1989.

In terms of style, it’s perhaps close to “Forbidden Telepathy” or “Again,” with lyrics that intensely convey the feelings of a sharp-edged woman.

This song, with its punchy melody, is also one of her signature works.

In an era when there were still many music shows, her performance of this song with choreography left a strong impression.

It peaked at No.

1 and sold 524,000 copies.

Released on August 31, 1987.

This is Shizuka Kudo’s solo debut single.

The lyrics are based on the emotions of a strong-willed woman, and the song has an up-tempo feel.

It came out just before Onyanko Club disbanded, and as a solo debut from an Onyanko member, it was one of the last successes and arguably the most successful.

It reached No.

1 on the Oricon weekly chart and sold 146,000 copies.

Blue VelvetKudō Shizuka

Released on May 28, 1997.

It was the theme song for the anime Dragon Ball.

It was a time when tie-ins were the norm, and while I’m not sure whether it matched the anime’s vibe, the punchier-than-ever style gave it plenty of impact.

It peaked at No.

8 and sold 257,000 copies.

A One-Night LoveKudō Shizuka

Released on December 28, 1988.

A classic that poignantly sings of a woman’s heart troubled by single-minded love.

It is one of her signature songs from her early period.

Despite the slump in CD sales at the time, buoyed by the momentum of her previous releases, it sold well.

It reached number one and sold 607,000 copies.

Among her singles, it is her second best-selling after “Dōkoku.” She performed this song at the 1989 NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen.

Released on August 24, 1988.

Used in a Kanebo commercial.

With a strikingly impactful chorus that’s easy to sing at karaoke, it resonated with women of the same generation and became a huge hit.

As with the previous release, the lyrics were written by Miyuki Nakajima, but this is an exceptionally bright, uplifting song.

The artist also performed it on the Kōhaku Uta Gassen, catapulting them to stardom.

It reached No.

1 and sold 541,000 copies.
