Shizuka Kudo’s famous and popular songs

Let me introduce songs by Shizuka Kudo, a singer and actress who was once active as a member of Onyanko Club.

Shizuka Kudo is also well known as the wife of Takuya Kimura of the national idol group SMAP.

You’ve probably had many chances to hear her songs in various contexts, such as commercials and TV show theme songs.

Her solo debut single, “Forbidden Telepathy,” shot straight to No.

1 on the Oricon chart, and she is said to be one of the “Four Queens” of female idols who were most active in the 1980s.

Released on November 18, 1994.

An even slower, more heartrending ballad than “I Want to Cry My Eyes Out.” It peaked at No.

8 and sold 414,000 copies.

There were many rain-themed songs from the late ’80s to the ’90s—Hideaki Tokunaga’s “Rainy Blue,” Chisato Moritaka’s “Ame,” ASKA’s “Hajimari wa Itsumo Ame,” Kyoko Koizumi’s “Yasashii Ame,” and so on.

She later released a song called “Amayo no Tsuki,” and Shizuka Kudo really suits moon and rain motifs.

Released on May 15, 1991.

The lyrics follow the same line as before, portraying a strong, assertive woman who seeks various things, but the melody is more subdued.

Perhaps due to its weaker impact, it peaked at No.

1, yet sales were 191,000 copies.

It was no longer a given that releasing a single would guarantee strong sales.

Blue RoseKudō Shizuka

Released on March 18, 1994.

While the first 20 singles—from the debut through the previous release “Anata Shika Inai Desho”—were all composed by Tsugutoshi Goto, this song was composed by Takashi Toshimi.

It feels like they were showcasing a new direction by bringing a rock flavor to the forefront.

It peaked at No.

8 and sold 305,000 copies.

It was also performed at the 1994 NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen.

Blue ZoneKudō Shizuka

Released on April 7, 1999.

This is the third single to include “Blue” in the title, following 1994’s “Blue Rose” and 1997’s “Blue Velvet.” The song’s style is similar to “Blue Rose” and “Blue Velvet” and isn’t bad, but by this time the artist’s momentum may have been fading.

It peaked at No.

28 and sold 20,000 copies.

The B-side of “Kirara.” In contrast to the slow, bittersweet feel of “Kirara,” this is an up-tempo song with a bright atmosphere.

This track was also used as an insert song in the drama “God, Please Give Me More Time.” As of now, “Kirara / in the sky” is the last single to have made the Oricon Top 10.

KiraraKudō Shizuka

Released on July 17, 1998.

An insert song for the Fuji TV drama “Kami-sama, Mou Sukoshi Dake” (God, Just a Little More).

In a drama where the heroine is ill, Kudo’s heartrending vocal performance matched the story perfectly.

It peaked at No.

6 and sold 384,000 copies.

At the end of the year, Kudo returned to the Kohaku Uta Gassen for the first time in four years and performed this song.

Released on January 29, 1992.

A relaxed ballad.

Although there had been ballad-type songs before, most were mid-tempo, and there hadn’t been anything this laid-back released as a single.

It peaked at No.

4 and sold 282,000 copies.

It was performed at the 1992 Kōhaku Uta Gassen.
