A collection of songs themed around the loss of loved ones—partners, family, friends, and others dear to you.

Though presented from many angles, all of them overflow with love for the departed and for those left behind.

If you are suffering from a sense of loss, or wish to sort through your feelings for someone precious who has gone on ahead, please give these a listen.

We cannot forget the reality of parting, but as you listen, you will likely find yourself able to look back on the days you spent together with a calmer heart.

[Songs of Bereavement] Songs about losing someone dear. Tracks to listen to while thinking of a loved one (71–80)

I want to see you.yuzu

The title “Aitai” (“I Want to See You”)—isn’t that the wish that most deeply fills the hearts of those who have lost someone precious? Used as the theme song for the drama Ghost Friends, this track was written by Yujin Kitagawa of Yuzu as a song to his late father.

Filling three or four notebooks in the process, Kitagawa crafted lyrics that give voice not only to feelings toward one’s parents, but to anyone who has experienced the death of someone dear.

The question posed at the beginning of the lyrics, and the title that answers it.

As you listen, you naturally recall your own loved one, and the tears begin to flow.

Your SkyOku Hanako

Your SkyOku Hanako

It’s a message song that sings of the sorrow of parting and the desire to be reborn and meet again.

It’s a track by singer-songwriter Hanako Oku, who has created many moving masterpieces like “Garnet,” and it’s included on her first album, “Yasashii Hana no Saku Basho,” released in 2006.

The feelings for a dear person that never fade, no matter how much time passes—I can’t help but relate it to myself when I listen.

It’s an unbearably tear-jerking number.

Keisuke Kuwata, who perfectly suits the summer and the sea.

This song is about feelings for a beloved person who has passed away and is no longer here, yet it still carries a refreshing quality—very much a Kuwata-like number.

The song “Aishii Hito e Sasagu Uta” (A Song Dedicated to My Beloved) is included on Kuwata’s third best-of album, “I LOVE YOU -now & forever-,” released in 2012.

It makes you inevitably think of someone dear, and the tears just start to fall…

Tatsuya Kitani is a singer-songwriter who also performs as the bassist for sajou no hana and serves as a support member for Yorushika.

His digital-only single “Ao no Sumika,” released on July 7, 2023, was chosen as the opening theme for the TV anime Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory/Premature Death.

The lyrics evoke a state of mind trapped by feelings for a precious person one can no longer meet—something that may make the hearts of those with similar experiences ache.

In contrast to the shadowy lyrics, the refreshing rock sound lingers in the ears, making it a striking number.

The Day of DepartureJULEPS

Elephant's Back: The Day of Departure – Complete Version / JULEPS Lyrics: Yasushi Akimoto Music: Yoshimasa Inoue
The Day of DepartureJULEPS

This song’s lyrics are written from the perspective of someone facing death.

It’s a piece by the piano chorus group JULEPS, released in 2007 as their major debut single.

It gained attention as the theme song for the anime “The Elephant’s Back: The Day of Departure.” The beautiful, warm choral work has a calming effect.

There’s also a novel that the anime is based on, so listening while reading it may help you connect with the story even more deeply.

planetariumOtsuka Ai

This song, Planetarium—one of Ai Otsuka’s signature tracks—is a heart-wrenching number that you listen to while thinking of an unrequited love or someone you can no longer meet.

Released in 2005 as Otsuka’s 10th single, it was also used as an image song for the hit drama Boys Over Flowers.

The lyrics feel like they’re sung for someone you’ll never see again, and they inevitably bring you to tears.

That longing to see someone who has passed away—surely everyone feels that way; our thoughts are the same.

Letter to the SkyGReeeeN

This is a song by GReeeeN, the popular music group known for representative hits like Kiseki.

It was included on their 2009 album Shio, Koshou.

The band often sings straightforward messages to loved ones.

This track was created after they received messages from fans saying things like, ‘Someone who passed away loved this song, so we played it at the funeral.’ It’s a farewell lyric written in GReeeeN’s signature, down-to-earth words—a bittersweet yet warm masterpiece that gently seeps into the heart.
