Recommended Japanese bands for men (11–20)

ScarletART-SCHOOL

This band, known for its literary lyrics employing a cut-up-like technique and a delicate, ephemeral atmosphere, has influenced many of today’s active bands.

Moreover, the distinctive character of vocalist Riki Kinoshita is loved not only by the band’s fans but by music fans of all kinds.

BE MY BABYCOMPLEX

After the shocking breakup of BOOWY and a solo stint, Tomoyasu Hotei teamed up with Koji Kikkawa to form this superunit.

Despite their brief period of activity, COMPLEX left a definite mark on Japan’s rock scene, and “BE MY BABY” is a quintessential, hard-hitting rock ’n’ roll track.

Plus, the music video is really cool.

SOUL LOVEGLAY

GLAY has many hit songs, but this one just sounds incredibly fun.

In the music video, the members’ close camaraderie shines through, making it a memorable track.

It was released at the same time as “Temptation,” and according to TAKURO, it’s “a song I was asked to add one more of, and I finished writing it in 10 minutes.”

RebornSyrup16g

This band, known for lyrics that are negative yet ultimately hopeful, enjoys a cult following especially among young people.

Their sound, influenced by acts like The Smiths, is simple yet irresistibly appealing to music enthusiasts.

HonnojiZAZEN BOYS

Formed around Mukai Shutoku, the vocalist of NUMBER GIRL, this band differs from NUMBER GIRL with its captivating odd-time-signature songs that incorporate synthesizer sounds.

The sound has also become even more angular, piercing straight into your ears.

GLORIAZIGGY

This song became ZIGGY’s biggest hit, but when Jukichi Morishige wrote it, the other members reportedly disliked it, saying it had too many kayōkyoku (Japanese pop) elements.

Its driving, beautiful melody line left a strong impression, making it a track that has gone down in the history of Japan’s rock scene.
