Aim for a high score! Karaoke songs for men to achieve top scores

If you’re simply aiming for a high score at karaoke, the key points for song selection will naturally be to choose songs with “easy-to-sing melodies,” “easy-to-understand lyrics,” and “clear, straightforward rhythms.”

That being the case, your picks will tend to come from the ’90s and earlier—so-called Showa-era and early Heisei kayōkyoku, new music, and J-pop.

Many recent songs have complex melodies and rhythms, and plenty of people think “This is hard!” after just one listen.

In this article, aimed at men who want to score high at karaoke, I’ve also proactively selected relatively singable tracks even from among more recent songs.

Compared to older hits, these are a bit more challenging to sing, but each song’s write-up includes tips and points to watch for to help you boost your score, so please use this as a guide and give them a try!

It feels great when you nail a high score!

You look like an idiot.Saucy Dog

You look like an idiot.Saucy Dog

Saucy Dog is a three-piece rock band that has gained popularity for their delicate musicality.

They’ve been active since 2013, and their popularity has only grown in the 2020s.

Among their songs, the one I especially recommend is “Baka Mitai.” When it comes to Saucy Dog, their striking high-tone vocals come to mind, right? Those high notes really shine in this track as well, but the overall vocal range isn’t actually that low.

If you can control your pitch properly, it’s a song where you can definitely aim for a high score.

A passing shower at 2 p.m.garari

Garari is a young singer-songwriter recognized even by Enon Kawatani.

Known for her inventive songwriting, she quickly gained attention starting in 2024.

Among her songs, the one I especially recommend is Afternoon Shower at Two O’Clock.

It has a very narrow vocal range and plenty of rests, so even those who struggle with breath control can sing it without difficulty.

The song modulates in the chorus, so as long as you’re careful not to miss the pitch there, you should be able to aim for a high score.

Riding in a Corolla IIOzawa Kenji

Riding in a Corolla II by Kenji Ozawa (lyrics in detail included)
Riding in a Corolla IIOzawa Kenji

Kenji Ozawa, a singer-songwriter who was active in the 1990s.

He’s famous for “Konya wa Boogie Back,” but his own songs are characterized by a languid, ennui-tinged style.

Among his tracks, the one I especially recommend is Karolla II ni Notte.

The song has a narrow vocal range and a very relaxed tempo, so anyone can easily aim for a high score.

There are quite a few sustained notes, so just be mindful of your breathing.

Since it doesn’t demand much volume, even those who aren’t confident in their lung capacity can sing it with ease.

SisterPorunogurafiti

Pornograffitti “Sister” (Yokohama Romance Porno ’06 ~Catch the Haneuma~) / PORNOGRAFFITTI “Sister (Live Ver.)”
SisterPorunogurafiti

Porno Graffitti’s 15th single, released in September 2004.

The song features a wistful melody reminiscent of Showa-era folk music, and combined with its comfortable mid-tempo pace, it’s one of the ideal choices for aiming for a high karaoke score.

There aren’t any particular melodic or rhythmic hurdles that would hinder a high score, but if you sing in the original key, you’ll need to produce firmly supported high notes—especially in the chorus—so the sound (your voice) doesn’t thin out.

Because the song is simple, be careful not to let the overall performance become monotonous; keep the meaning of the lyrics in mind and aim for solid, expressive singing.

Promise of SunflowersHata Motohiro

Motohiro Hata / Promise of a Sunflower (Short Ver.)
Promise of SunflowersHata Motohiro

This is one of Motohiro Hata’s signature songs, showcasing his clear, translucent voice and overwhelming vocal ability.

It was also used as the theme song for a hugely popular anime, and its straightforward lyrics and musical worldview captured many hearts.

The tempo is relatively slow and the pitch is easy to match, so you can expect a high score.

I can’t say it.Gō Hiromi

This is the 66th single by Japanese singer Hiromi Go, released on May 1, 1994.

It’s a beautifully mellow ballad and a true classic.

At the time, it was released as the second installment of Go’s trilogy of ballads.

The melody is very simple and easy to sing, making it a great choice when you want to aim for a high karaoke score with a ballad.

However, if you mumble your way through it, the song can end up sounding quite dull.

When you sing the high parts, such as the chorus, try placing the sound against your upper palate so that the higher overtones resonate clearly.

Just doing that will add a sparkling quality to your voice and make it sound really appealing!

DororoASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION

ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION 『Dororo』Music Video Short ver.
DororoASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION

This is a song by ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION written specifically as the opening theme for the TV anime Dororo.

It’s a cool, fast-paced number, yet the lyrics aren’t crammed in, so you can clearly aim for each note.

With this song, you can sing calmly without rushing, and even if you’re about to make a mistake, you’ll likely avoid it at the last second.

Aim for a high score and give it a try.
