Swimming carp streamers

Perfect for May craft recreation and for finger dexterity training! Here’s a carp streamer (koinobori) that looks like it’s really swimming.

First, roll an A4 sheet of copy paper into a tube to make the body.

Decide which end will be the head, draw in the eye, and cut a V-shaped notch at the tail end.

Make scales out of origami paper and stick them onto the body, and in no time your koinobori is complete.

If you add a crease around the middle of the body, it will look like it’s billowing in the wind as if swimming.

You can also make a windsock or pinwheel to decorate, but pasting lots of koinobori onto a large sheet of drawing paper would be quite striking too.

In senior care facilities, people often enjoy lively conversations while looking at each other’s creations, so the fun continues even after the crafting is done.

Lotus Blossoms and a Ladybug

We’d like to introduce a wall decoration featuring Chinese milk vetch (renge) that brings a springtime feel.

Because there are many steps that involve cutting origami into the same shapes, prepare templates for the petals, leaves, stems, and ladybugs in advance.

Cut pink origami paper into petal shapes and gently rub them with scissors; they’ll naturally curl upward, creating a three-dimensional look when displayed.

In the same way, use green origami to cut out the leaves and stems.

For the ladybugs, cut shapes from red and black origami, remembering to add the spots.

Once all the materials are ready, layer and glue the petals to form the flowers, then attach the leaves and ladybugs.

The ladybugs flying toward the blossoms look adorable and enhance the spring atmosphere.

Since there are no complicated steps, this craft is also recommended for recreational activities in senior care facilities.

onion

Many older people have experience growing vegetables, don’t they? This time, we’re introducing an origami onion that will bring back those memories.

It’s very easy to make.

Crumple a sheet of copy paper into a ball, leaving a hollow space in the center.

Do the same with green origami paper—crumple it and shape it into leaves with the green side facing out.

Insert the leaves into the copy paper and glue them in place.

Finally, crumple brown origami paper and wrap it around the copy paper.

Wrap it so the white part doesn’t show, and your onion is complete.

Make two of them and tie them together with jute twine to evoke the image of onions hanging under the eaves.

It might even spark stories like, “I used to make these when I was young.” Because there are many hands-on steps, this is also recommended for finger dexterity training and as a recreational activity.

Kabuto ornament

A perfect samurai helmet decoration for Children’s Day. You can make it with a paper plate or construction paper 👍 #ChildrensDay #HandmadeCrafts #ElementarySchoolEntranceExam #Crafts
Kabuto ornament

A piece that beautifully expresses tradition using paper plates.

Create a stylish “kabuto display” for adults to enjoy.

Let’s easily craft a kabuto (samurai helmet) ornament from everyday paper plates—perfect for Children’s Day or seasonal interior decor.

By combining elements like washi and gold or silver origami paper, you’ll achieve a dignified, refined finish.

Infusing the project with the essence of traditional culture turns it into a “piece with a story,” not just a decoration.

Why not bring into your daily life a craft that invites quiet, contemplative creativity and reflects Japanese aesthetics—something only adults can truly savor?

Wisteria flowers brimming with charm

Wisteria blooms beautiful pale purple flowers from mid-April to mid-May.

Countless blossoms hang from its long vines, captivating all who see them.

Let’s recreate that scene as a wall decoration.

Make lots of small petals and stick them onto origami paper shaped like tree branches.

The more petals, the lovelier it looks, so let’s invite seniors to help! For the branches, crumple construction paper first and then cut out the shapes.

Once you’ve made the wisteria maiden and the leaves, attach everything to a large sheet of paper, such as poster paper, to complete the piece.

It’s a charming wall display of a wisteria maiden gazing up at a curtain of wisteria.

Seeing the decorated mural may help some seniors feel the spirit of May.

Just cut and paste: three-dimensional origami hydrangea

[Origami] Just cut and paste ✨ How to make hydrangeas
Just cut and paste: three-dimensional origami hydrangea

We’d like to introduce a three-dimensional craft idea that looks like softly blooming hydrangeas: “Cut-and-Paste 3D Origami Hydrangeas.” Using origami paper or flower-shaped punch-outs, you glue on each petal one by one, so you’ll really feel a sense of accomplishment when it’s finished.

The key is gently shaping the overall form, which naturally helps you focus as your hands are at work.

If you keep the colors subdued, your indoor space during the rainy season will quickly take on a softer feel.

Just placing it quietly in a corner of a room lets you sense the season and brings a calming mood.

It’s a craft that perfectly combines adorable looks with the pleasure of careful, deliberate making.

Azaleas and butterflies

[Craft Idea] Azaleas and Butterflies (May Wall Decoration) (Elderly Recreation, Occupational Therapy OT, Day Service, Childcare) (Origami, Flowers, 3D, Easy Craft, Origami DIY) Azalea and Butterfly Wall Decoration
Azaleas and butterflies

Azaleas, which bloom in vivid pinks and purples, are at their best from mid-April to mid-May.

As a May wall decoration idea, how about making azaleas and butterflies? Let’s fold azaleas using red and pink origami.

First, make crease lines and use them as guides as you fold.

While the paper is still folded, cut it with scissors into the shape of petals.

Then use the scissors to round and shape the cut petals.

For the butterflies, using washi-patterned origami will really make them stand out.

Butterflies fluttering over a brightly colored field of azaleas is sure to lift the spirits of anyone who sees it.
