AnnaKai Band

A ballad by Kai Band released in 1979.
KAI Yoshihiro singing while thinking of a lover in a long-distance relationship is so cool, isn’t he? When a name is included, it makes you empathize even more.
It’s a Christmas song that feels a bit bittersweet yet warm at the same time.
I imagine some people have listened to or sung it while substituting in the name of someone dear to them.
While Kai Band often evokes a passionate image, “Anna” is a masterpiece that gently wraps you up—like a quiet flame burning on a cold night, lighting a warm glow in your heart.
Be sure to compare it with the 2012 remake as well.
Heartbroken over JuliaChekkāzu

A single released in 1984 and the Checkers’ biggest hit.
The lyrics were written by Masao Urino, who also penned many 80s hits like their signature song “Namida no Request” and Rats & Star’s “Megumi no Hito.” It perfectly captures Fumiya’s charisma and cuteness, overflowing with a mature mood.
Reading the lyrics, Julia seems like a woman who’s out of reach.
It brings back memories of passionate love from the past, wrapping me in a nostalgic, romantic feeling.
SherryOzaki Yutaka

It’s a track from legendary singer-songwriter Yutaka Ozaki’s second album “KAIKISEN” (Return Line), released in 1985.
He ran recklessly toward his dreams, but lost many things along the way.
There are times when despair threatens to overwhelm us, yet the presence of someone precious can keep us from falling.
The model for the song isn’t known, but it’s said he wrote it while looking at a river near Korakuen, and the song gives courage and strength.
It’s a song that faces one’s own weaknesses and is dedicated to a beloved person.
The way he sings—like speaking carefully to you—and the power of his words strike straight to the heart.
Who is “Shelly” to you?

Linda LindaTHE BLUE HEARTS

Linda Linda is a famous rock number by THE BLUE HEARTS that gets everyone fired up the moment they hear it.
The title uses a word that makes you think, “Is ‘Linda’ a woman’s name?” Given the lyrics read like a love letter to a cherished woman, I assumed they borrowed the name of a beloved woman—but apparently that’s not the case.
Hiroto Kōmoto, who wrote the lyrics and composed the music, answered the question “Who is Linda?” by saying, “There’s no answer—I don’t even know.” It seems Linda isn’t a real person, but rather an imaginary beloved within the world of the song.
A Kiss to MaryTHE YELLOW MONKEY

The Yellow Monkey’s “name song” is “Kiss to Marie,” included on their 1995 album “smile.” French appears right from the beginning of the track, making it clear that Marie is French—a Parisienne.
With lyrics brimming with The Yellow Monkey’s characteristic sensuality, it offers a taste of an adult world.
In contrast to those lyrics, the melody has a fairly pop feel.
This sense of contrast gives the impression that the descent into temptation with the Parisienne is being glossed over somehow, as if the narrator is stretching to be her equal or even surpass her—and that tension adds an element of fun.
SilviaJanne Da Arc

This is a song by Janne Da Arc with a theme of romance.
As you might expect from a love-themed piece, it’s a wonderful love song that even brings to mind a proposal.
I imagine many women feel their hearts flutter when they hear this track.
The title of the song, “Sylvia,” refers in the lyrics to the name of the beloved woman, but it seems that Yasu, who wrote the lyrics, actually likes the car called Silvia and substituted it as a woman’s name! Keeping that in mind as you listen, you can really tell just how much he loves Silvia (the car) lol.
Nanakariyushi 58

Kariyushi 58, a band from Okinawa, sings the name-themed song “Nana,” which is a proposal song! It was also featured in the Kansai TV program Chichin Puipui’s segment “Oishii Uta,” which introduces songs by artists active in western Japan.
The title “Nana” was chosen to signify combining each other’s names, born from the idea of proposing and living together from now on, calling each other by our names.
It conveys a straightforward feeling of wanting to walk through the rest of life together, after overcoming many days since the time we first met.
