[Childcare] For 2-year-olds! November craft activity ideas
In November, when leaves turned red and yellow flutter down, the feeling of autumn is everywhere.
We want children to fully enjoy the charms of the season.
So this time, we’re sharing November craft ideas recommended for 2-year-olds.
We’ve gathered autumn-themed ideas featuring natural items like acorns and fallen leaves, seasonal foods like mushrooms and sweet potatoes, and cute creatures like bagworms and hedgehogs.
There’s a wealth of activities that let children enjoy the textures of various materials while becoming completely absorbed in creating!
Please use these as inspiration and make the most of the artistic spirit of autumn.
Since we’re introducing ideas that make use of children’s free imagination, we use the term “制作 (seisaku)” to mean “crafts” in the main text.

Autumn-colored owls with bleed painting and handprints
Here’s a fall-themed owl craft idea that lets you preserve children’s handprints.
Use diluted paint to cover a sheet of white drawing paper.
Once the whole surface is painted and has dried, cut it into the shape of an owl.
After attaching the eyes and beak pieces, add the handprints on the left and right to create the wings.
Finally, attach the feet pieces to complete the owl.
Using paint in brown tones will give it an autumn feel.
It’s a great craft idea that will become a memorable keepsake for a 2-year-old.
Rolling acorn with a marble run
Let’s make acorns you can create while playing by rolling marbles! First, cut brown construction paper into the shape of an acorn.
Next, roll marbles coated with paint across the paper.
If you place a tray or similar item under the paper, kids can work safely and comfortably.
Once patterns appear on the paper, cut out a cap shape and attach it to the acorn illustration.
Finally, use cut pipe cleaners to make arms and legs, draw a face, and you’re done! How about making some cute acorns that capture the feeling of autumn?
Bear wreath

Here’s a bear wreath craft for autumn using toilet paper rolls.
As prep, cover the toilet paper rolls with construction paper in fall colors.
Next, cut one roll into 2–3 ring-shaped sections.
Also prepare the bear face parts.
Have the children thread the rings made from the toilet paper rolls onto a piece of yarn.
Finally, tie the ends of the yarn together and attach the bear face to finish.
When tying the yarn, it’s a good idea to make a loop so the wreath can be hung.
Feel free to add stickers to the wreath or decorate it however you like!
Dragonfly made with decalcomania

Speaking of familiar creatures in autumn, dragonflies come to mind.
Let’s try making a dragonfly using the decalccomania (paint transfer) technique! Fold a sheet of white drawing paper in half, then open it and drop your favorite paints onto one side.
When you’re done, close the paper and press down firmly from above.
Cut it into the shape of dragonfly wings, and when you slowly open it, a beautiful symmetrical pattern will appear.
Attach the dragonfly’s body and eyes there, and you’re done! It’s a fun craft that lets children enjoy the excitement of the big reveal.
Give it a try!
Little Picture Book Author
The period from October 27 to November 9 is Reading Week, isn’t it? So, as a reading-related idea, I’d like to introduce “little picture book authors.” This is a creative project idea with a lot of flexibility.
First, on construction paper prepared to look like a picture book, have children draw whatever they like.
Once they’re done, assemble a head, arms, and legs made from construction paper so it looks like they’re holding a book, and you’re finished.
You can even use a photo for the face parts.
Adding a speech bubble to explain what they drew is also a nice touch.
Acorn pouch

As an activity to enjoy with children during the autumn season, making an acorn pochette is highly recommended.
First, cut an empty tissue box and paint it in your favorite colors.
Next, make acorns out of origami paper and use a craft punch to add your own original patterns.
Finally, thread a string through the tissue box to finish it off! If the children take their completed acorn pochettes and go to the park with their teacher to look for acorns, they’ll be able to fully enjoy the nature of autumn.
Give it a try!

Bagworm made with torn-paper collage

Why not try making bagworms—a classic autumn theme—using the torn-paper collage technique that kids love? You’ll need brown origami paper, a toilet paper roll, glue, and so on.
Prepare the bagworms’ eyes in advance as the teacher.
Let the children freely tear the origami paper.
Next, have them glue the torn pieces onto the toilet paper roll.
Finally, attach the eyes and it’s done.
Children can enjoy the tactile feel of tearing paper, and it also serves as good fine motor practice.
