[Childcare] Fun for October! Craft ideas recommended for 4-year-olds

Four-year-olds become even more dependable in autumn.

You’ll probably start to hear conversations like, “Next year you’ll be in the oldest class!” Their crafting activities also gain depth, as they grapple with how to express their own ideas and offer imaginative suggestions that make the most of their creativity.

This time, we’ve put together October craft ideas we’d love to try with four-year-olds.

We’ve prepared a variety of ideas—from seasonal materials and motifs to projects that draw out their originality.

Please use them as a reference.

Since the children’s creations are treated as works, we use the term “seisaku” (production/art-making) in the text.

Let’s make a fox out of origami—a creature that often appears in fairy tales and folk stories set in autumn.

This time, we’ll use two sheets of origami paper.

First, fold the first sheet into a triangle.

Lift and fold only the top layer at the largest corner so that a small white part shows.

Turn it over, then fold both side corners up toward the center to form the ears.

Draw the eyes with a pen.

Next, fold the second sheet into a triangle, then fold it in half again, slightly offset.

Finally, glue the face piece from the first sheet to the body piece from the second sheet, and you’re done.

There aren’t many steps, and it’s very easy to make, so give it a try!

Handmade microphone

[4-year-olds] Looks just like the real thing?! Handmade microphone!
Handmade microphone

Let me introduce a cute original microphone craft.

Prepare a plastic wrap tube, a capsule toy container, origami paper, and yarn, and let’s make it.

Wrap the origami paper around the plastic wrap tube so that a bit of the paper sticks out on either the left or right side.

On the side where the paper sticks out, tape on the yarn, crumple the extra paper to make it small, and tuck it into the center of the wrap tube—this completes the microphone handle.

Next, place the capsule toy container on top of the wrap tube and tape it so it won’t fall off, and your microphone is complete! Draw a switch on the handle, and add illustrations or stickers as you like to create your very own original microphone.

Make your mushroom-themed table even more festive! Here are some ideas for mushroom chopstick rests.

All you need is 9-cm square origami paper.

Fold the 9-cm squares into mushroom shapes and display them on the table as chopstick rests.

Just having handmade mushroom chopstick rests can make mealtime more fun! Since you’ll be using small 9-cm origami paper, it’s best to work together with a parent or teacher.

Until you get used to the folding steps, we recommend starting with 15-cm square origami paper.

fly agaric

fly agaric

Here’s an idea for making a fly agaric mushroom that captures its distinctive features.

You will need red origami paper and white round stickers.

The fly agaric is a mushroom characterized by its red cap with white spots and it grows on the ground in broadleaf forests.

Although it looks attractive, it is poisonous, so be careful not to touch it carelessly if you see one.

Use the red origami paper to make the cap and add spots with the white round stickers.

Some steps are a bit tricky, so it’s safer to work together with a parent or teacher!

In conclusion

Four-year-olds have much stronger imaginations and can express their own images and enjoy the world of make-believe.

When working on crafts, we want to prepare activities and themes that let children show their individuality.

All the ideas introduced this time offer a high degree of freedom.

Let’s listen to the children’s “I want to do it like this!” and let them explore freely.
