Making Japanese-patterned bookmarks

Autumn is often called the season for reading, isn’t it? How about making a simple bookmark with a traditional Japanese pattern? For the bookmark body, cut a piece of fabric with a Japanese motif to the size of two bookmarks, apply double-sided tape to just half of the back, then fold it in the middle and press to adhere.
That alone is a bit too simple, so let’s add a small temari ball and a ribbon—often used in hanging decorations—as accents.
Punch a small hole at the top of the bookmark, thread a slightly long ribbon through, then thread a temari ball onto each end of the ribbon and tie them.
This alone gives it a festive look, and the temari balls swaying at the ribbon tips are very cute.
If you prefer a stiffer bookmark, you can insert cardstock between the layers of fabric.
Making an autumn calendar

Let’s try making a handmade calendar for each season that you see every day! Autumn brings many images to mind—an appetite for delicious food, sports, and reading—and it’s full of iconic flowers and foods like cosmos, maple leaves, chestnuts, and sweet potatoes.
Let’s create and decorate an October calendar inspired by autumn! You can make cosmos and autumn leaves out of origami and paste them on, or draw directly on the calendar.
Collage, paper cutting—feel free to express your own vision of autumn.
Pastel Art of Autumn Leaves

Pastel art, which lets you enjoy a soft, gentle atmosphere, is sure to shine in autumn projects too! How about creating pastel pieces with autumn leaves as the motif? Since pastels are basically blended with your fingers, you don’t need special tools like brushes.
It’s an easy way to enjoy art, so it’s also recommended for craft activities in day service programs.
It’s convenient to prepare leaf-shaped stencils in advance—try making autumn-themed shapes like maple and ginkgo.
You can spread pastel on the background, place the stencil, and use an eraser to lift out the silhouette, or you can color directly with your fingers over the stencil.
It’s perfect for fine-motor training for seniors, so give it a try!

Book cover

Autumn is a quiet, comfortable season that’s perfect for getting a lot of reading done.
To make your reading-filled autumn even more enjoyable, why not try making your own book cover? All you need is a tenugui (Japanese hand towel), some ribbon, and fabric glue to attach them—it’s easy to make.
Cut the fabric to fit your book’s size, press creases with an iron, and attach the ribbon to hold the cover in place, and you’re done.
One of the best parts is that you can create all kinds of book cover designs depending on the tenugui pattern.
Plus, the soft material won’t interfere with your reading and makes it easy to carry around.
Moving Sports Day with Paper Plates

This is a craft project themed on a sports day—an autumn highlight—designed to create lively movement using a paper plate.
First, cut the paper plate in half and insert two thin strips of construction paper into a small gap between the halves.
Punch holes in both the construction paper and the plate, then thread twine through them to create a moving mechanism.
Finally, attach illustrations of a footrace to the construction paper area to complete a dynamic sports day scene.
You can also enjoy various customizations, such as choosing which illustrations to include and what decorations to add.
art pumpkin

When it comes to fall activities at day service centers, making art pumpkins is a perfect fit.
The beautiful pieces you create while having fun can be taken home and enjoyed as interior decor! The process is simple: just cut materials like newspaper or tissue paper according to a template and paste them together.
The result is three-dimensional, making it a lovely autumn ornament to brighten up any room.
It’s also perfect for Halloween-themed crafts, so why not try creating some fall memories together with older adults? These will not only enhance the autumn atmosphere at home, but are sure to delight relatives and friends as gifts as well.
Autumn message card

When writing messages to family and friends, why not prepare a seasonal message card? This is an autumn-themed card that combines paper cutouts with paper painted using watercolors.
It’s also great for fine motor skills, so consider creating designs with autumn motifs like maple leaves and acorns, and give it a try.
