In October childcare, kids will be captivated! A collection of play ideas to fully enjoy autumn

October brings a stronger sense of autumn, and the playground is now filled with colorful fallen leaves and acorns.

Using these gifts from nature, along with Halloween-themed crafts and even pretend taste-harvesting play, we’re introducing October-only activities that stimulate children’s five senses.

As autumn deepens, look for ideas for fun activities that nurture children’s curiosity.

Please use this as a reference to enjoy seasonally rich play and spend time filled with children’s smiles.

Fallen leaves mask

Transform into a lion with a fallen-leaf mask?!
Fallen leaves mask

The “fallen-leaf mask” is a game you often see in autumn that uses the fallen leaves all around.

How to play: poke holes for the eyes and mouth in a leaf—that’s it.

Since you tear the holes by hand, each mask ends up with a different expression.

If you can find a big leaf, you can tear it to match the position of your own eyes and mouth, and it could make a mask you can use for Halloween.

It’s simple but a lot of fun, so give it a try! If you wear your finished mask and explore the park, you might enjoy it in a slightly different way than usual.

Pool of fallen leaves

When you think of pools, you think of summer—but how about making a “leaf pool” by gathering lots of leaves instead of water? It’s easy to make if you collect the leaves in bags while cleaning, so I highly recommend it.

Dive into the leaf pool, or scoop up armfuls of leaves and toss them up into the sky.

Kids are geniuses at play, so they’re sure to come up with fun new ways to enjoy it!

When you think of something that makes you feel autumn in the park, fallen leaves come to mind, right? Let’s all pick up lots of leaves and enjoy making leaf art together.

Glue the leaves onto drawing paper and imagine them as something to create your picture.

If you use a leaf as part of a fish’s body, you can add the tail and fins with crayons.

Small leaves can be used as people’s eyes, and then you can draw a face around them.

Also, if you lightly rub the back of a glued leaf with a colored pencil, the veins of the leaf will beautifully stand out.

You can observe the veins and have all sorts of conversations about them.

Fallen leaves are sure to spark children’s imaginations!

Sports day pretend play

[Ages 0–1] Let’s move our bodies with energy! Pretend Sports Day!
Sports day pretend play

Autumn is the season for sports festivals.

Let’s play a pretend sports day that’s perfect as a rehearsal for the real thing! How about trying events you can do indoors and getting your bodies moving with lots of energy? We recommend laying down mats so children won’t get hurt if they fall.

Set up items like vaulting boxes or slides to create an obstacle-course atmosphere, dance to music, and prepare activities that let children move their bodies to the fullest! It’s also great to enjoy this as mixed-age interaction, with older children helping and supporting the younger ones.

In conclusion

In October childcare, children can enjoy activities and crafts that let them express themselves vibrantly while experiencing the blessings of autumn.

There’s an abundance of seasonal fun, like playing with fallen leaves and acorns collected on walks, Halloween festivities, and pretend camping.

Please take your time savoring the warm memories unique to this season together with the children.
